Ethel Hibbert, Manchester

Postby DianaCanada » Mon Jun 10, 2019 2:40 pm

Two years ago this month I posted a query about an Ethel Hibbert, daughter of Samuel Hibbert and Annie Prosser. Ethel or her mother haven't turned up yet, and Samuel seems to have made a bigamous second marriage to Sarah Robinson.
I am now looking for another Ethel, first cousin to the Ethel above.
Ethel Hibbert was born in the Sep Q 1897, Manchester. She was the daughter of William Hibbert and Sarah Ann Tavner. She was the oldest of 12 children, four of whom did not survive infancy. Ethel is with her parents on the 1911 census at 8 Steele St., Queens Rd., Manchester.
I cannot find her after this point. I have checked all the reasonable marriages in the Manchester area, the only two I could not eliminate in some way were: to John Eyre, Jun 1914 in Manchester (she would have been 16 but possible), and to Joseph Horobin Sep 1921, Manchester. I found a Joseph b. Mar 1890 BMD but not on the 1939, although a death in Mar 1956 BMD, age 66 looks promising.
Cannot find any death for Ethel under either Eyre or Horobin that fits.
I thought she might have sailed to Australia to join a brother who I am fairly sure went there but can find nothing to substantiate that, either.
Any help appreciated!

There's a marriage for Ethel Hibbert to David Somerville, at St Augustine's, Newton Heath, Manchester, in March 1923. Her father named as William, a carter. Both aged 25, and at the time of marriage, both living in Steele Street.

Thank you! I missed this one, looks very promising. Where did you find this marriage? I can't see it on the Lancashire Parish Clerks.

It's on ancestry - Manchester Marriages & Banns.
Assuming it's the 'right' marriage for your Ethel, she and David seem to have had at least 3 children:
Ethel in 1923, James in 1926, and Iris in 1932, all Manchester, all mother's maiden name Hibbert.

Ethel Somerveille remarried in 1936 to Charles McCurdy. She can be found in the 1939 Register although her DoB of 10 July 1897 is different to the DoB on her baptism record (31 July 1897). She passed away in 1962 in Manchester.

David Somerville died 31/8/1935, and was buried in Phillips Park Cemetery, Miles Platting, Manchester.

Thank you, all! You beat me to it, had something else, non family history, to do! Am thrilled you have found Ethel for me.
Might be posting about a couple of her elusive siblings soon.
