Dear Chelseagirl, my apologies for my post yesterday responding to your message for information on 128 (Heavy) Battery RGA, when I addressed you as "Dear Judy" my mistake. Regards Lyndale in Melbourne.

Lyndale - many thanks for the allocations of 159 Siege. Somewhere on my To do list is trying to understand the background to my GG uncle's career. His papers survive and show that he was with 159 Siege Battery until the last months of the war when he got attached to an accounting group of the Indian Army - don't remember the exact title. I'm curious to see if 159 Siege Battery's war work was winding down at that point so that they could afford to lose an NCO or whether they'd decided that paying people to fight was actually quite important! That's all for another day.
One question though - have the allocations of the RGA batteries that you quote been published or is your data all from unpublished sources, no doubt painstakingly compiled?

Hi Adrian, the source for the higher HQ's for the 159 (S) Bty came up on the GWF when I Googled the name of the unit. The GWF respondent 'Essdeed" has included in their message an image of a WW1 postcard from one of he unit's soldier's that had all the info listed in very readable handwriting. Google "159 Siege Battery Great War Forum" and the respondent "Essdeed" answered two separate GWF enquiries about this unit by posting the image of the postcard each time. (1) Started by Graham Stewart 28.6.2006 (answer dated 30.6.2006). (2) Started by 'Kildaremark' 4.5.2006 (answer dated 4.5.2006).
My hobby is WW1 genealogy, therefore if you would send me the name, rank, number of your 159 (S) Bty soldier, I'll have a good look at his record you found (I'm with all the major websites) plus see what I can find out from secondary sources, to answer your query about his transfer to India.
PS Can I send you my personal email address in a PN, or is that not allowed?

For general information there is a £3.50 download from the National Archives which someone described as very informative ( I haven't downloaded it myself so can't comment)https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov. ... r/C4558646

Maureen - huge thanks for tipping me off about WO 95/5494. You have to download 4 hefty PDFs running to about 225Mb but it's well worth it. Well, at first glance it is!
I am really not sure about who compiled what, where and when, nor about the coverage but there's a lot...
Graham - the "postcards" that you refer to for 159 Siege, etc, - yes, I thought that they were cards as well, but they're not - they are (well written) pages from a report that is part of WO 95/5494. It just so happens that "essdee" has sensibly cropped the image for each battery. And his images are in colour so someone's possibly imaged the pages separately from the TNA digitisation guys?
WO 95/5494 contains loads of allocations for various support units (ASC, Medical stuff, etc.) as Maureen's copy of the catalogue entry shows, though to what extent they are complete histories, I've no idea. It also lists the RGA Mountain, Heavy and Siege Batteries with their HAG/HABs, ditto RHA/RFA Brigades but - I think - only after they become Army Brigades, not beforehand.
