Passenger lists prior to 1878

Postby Jennyhub33 » Thu May 16, 2019 3:10 pm

My great grandfather, John Gordon Dunbar, travelled to USA (1871/1872), married in 1872 in Ohio, had 3 children (born 1873, 1874 and 1876). I know that the family then returned to England between 1876 and 1877 as his second child died in London in 1877 and his fourth child was born in London in 1878. How can I find details of when and how they travelled as incoming passenger lists seem to start in 1878.

The National Archives (Kew) guide "Passengers"
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help ... assengers/
says
"There are very few records in The National Archives of passengers before 1878"

If you read further, the records which are available before 1878, would not help you at all.

Cheers
