Help with marriage certificate, Florence Wallace

Postby Simon45 » Mon May 06, 2019 12:36 pm

Hello
I am trying to find the previous marriage(s) of Florence Wallace aged 40 , a widow
- who married George Munt on the marriage certificate of 1912 enclosed
- her father is John Garratt ( deceased )

Also shown is Florence Munt in 1939 census which shows Florence’s date of birth , 14 November 1869
( She is living with Jessie S E Willis and Sidney Willis )

Florence died in 1947 , aged 76 , death certificate enclosed
The informant was her daughter in law J S E Willis

Also the death certificate of her husband George Munt
The informant was his step son F Willis

I GUESS FLORENCES FIRST MARRIAGE WAS TO A WILLIS
- then her second marriage to a WALLACE

Any help much appreciated

Thank you

Florence was born about 1869, and she names her father as John Garrett, shoemaker. Have you found her with her birth family in any records?

Hi
I wonder if Florence’s maiden name Garratt has been spelt incorrectly...?

Looking at George Munt, I discovered he had been married at least three times, so It’s not unreasonable to assume Florence was likely to have been in the same position.
She married George in 1912, so is likely to have been in same area in 1911. I found a Florry Wallace living nearby, she was born in Suffolk, with a daughter. This daughters birth shows her mothers maiden name wasn’t Garret/Garratt as expected (if I have correct registration :D )
Therefore I suspect John Garratt may be her step-father, and took on his name when her mother married him! I have it a few times in my own tree, where birth name was dropped, and the individual adopted the surname of a step-parent.
This is the joy of genealogy, the detective work in trying to work out who was who. If she was married more than twice, I doubt you’ll easily discover her subsequent name changes.
I’ll have another in-depth look tomorrow :D

EDIT Sorry, I remembered it wrong. She was with a son Fred (as Ianbee states) not a daughter. My bad

Marriage of Jessie to F Willis
June 1925 West Ham 4a 816
Chinnery, Jessie S. E. - spouse Willis
Willis, Frederick W. - spouse Chinnery

As she was widowed in Billericay in 1939, could this be her husband's death?
Sep 1937 Billricay 4a 514
Willis, Frederick Walter
age 35

Quite possibly them. Also mentioned by Mick. Flory was born Nayland, Suffolk.
But the only likely Frederick Walter Willis or Wallace birth I can see around the time is in Lambeth, and the mother was not formerly Garrett -
Sep 1902 Lambeth 1d 469
Willis, Frederick Walter
mother Welham

Was that chap a twin? Same reference, Sep 1902, Lambeth, Frank Willis, mother Welham.
So far, not making much sense! But I mention it because in 1901 there is a Florence E Welham, 30, born Suffolk Nayland, working as a cook in Mortlake in Surrey. Not found a Willis/Wallace - Welham marriage.

Hi Mick
Thank you so much for the reply and information
I wonder if it’s worth getting Fredericks birth certificate as this will show his mothers maiden name
Do you have the index reference for Frederick please?

BTW
I do have all 3 of George Munts marriage certificates

Please let me know tomorrow any more information

Thank you
Simon

Hello
Thank you for the reply and information

Do you think it’s worth ordering Fredericks birth certificate as this will show his mothers full name and who his mother was married to

Thank you
Simon
