Searching for Thomas Howard

Postby martis » Mon Apr 29, 2019 10:34 am

Ellen Gertrude Lily Dicks is commemorated on the World War I roll of honour plaque of Queens Street Street Congregational Church Wolverhampton (now in the URC Tettenhall Wood ). Her headstone in Toxteth Park Cemetery Liverpool is inscribed 'she gave her life for her country'. A Red Cross card confirms she was a VAD during 1915, but left before her marriage to Thomas Howard on 25 January 1916 and she then lived with him in Blackpool before her death in Toxteth Infirmary on 26 September 1916. The causes of her death were not ones for which the war could have been responsible. Further light might be thrown on her life (and why she was commemorated) by finding the death of her Thomas Howard. Is he possibly related to any readers? Thomas Howard

Perhaps her parents or relatives paid for her name to be included????

Are you willing to share her causes of death?

You say that Ellen lived in Blackpool with Thomas, before dying in Toxteth Infirmary. Do you know whether Thomas went with her to Toxteth, or stayed in Blackpool?

Your search is for the death of Thomas Howard, which is proving elusive. There are a few deaths in Lancashire for someone of the right name and approximate age, but unfortunately, nothing in the records to specifically identify your Thomas.

Using THomas Howard's birth year and death year after 1916, the following can be found
Thomas Howard
abt 1847 Oct 1918 Oct-Nov-Dec Leigh Lancashire

Thomas Howard
abt 1847 Oct 1916 Oct-Nov-Dec Rugby Warwickshire

Thomas Howard
abt 1847 Oct 1918 Oct-Nov-Dec Warrington Lancashire

Thomas Howard
abt 1847 Oct 1934 Oct-Nov-Dec Wolverhampton Staffordshire

The latter covers the area his late wife came from!

Hi,

If you're on Facebook you can ask to join Preston Branch Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society and Fylde Branch, I'm sure someone will be able to help.

There's always the possibility that Thomas went to live with one of his children/grandchildren, following the death of Lily, so he could have been anywhere in the UK when he died.

The Lancashire Evening Post 17 Nov 1931 carries a notice about the estate of Thomas Howard, deceased, retired draughtsman of 14 Beach Crescent, Walney Island near Barrow in Furness, who died 2 Feb 1928.

The Probate entry shows he died at the Broughton Hotel, Broughton in Furness and that Probate was granted to Robert Howard, timber merchant, & Margaret Bamber, wife of Henry Bamber.

I note that one of Thomas's sons was named Robert, b 1881, and the 1939 register shows a Robert Howard, Timber Salesman living in Preston with a YoB of 1881.

Your post also states that Thomas's daughter, Margaret, (b1878) married Thomas B Corcoran in 1914 at Preston. It was actually Thomas M Corcoran, and Lancashire BMD expands this to Thomas Macmaster Corcoran.

Thomas Macmaster Corcoran died in Walsall in 1915, aged 34, and a Margaret Corcoran married Henry Bamber in Barrow in Furness in 1917.

This shows that the two executors were indeed the children of the man you are looking for, so the 2 Feb 1928 death is the correct one.
