Can anyone identify this uniform?

Postby Brypye » Sat Apr 27, 2019 2:36 pm

Hi, A DNA match on ancestry thinks this is a photo of my great-grandfather, Arthur Phillips Parsons born 1893 in Lancashire. The postcard appears to be from Aldershot barracks, and I would guess he is in the cavalry.

Is there a way to search the records for the barracks, or can anyone identify anything from the uniform, such as regiment? We think this photo was taken approx 1915, but again any confirmation that this is a WW1 uniform would be helpful. I haven't been able to find a definite service record for him (his parents are Robert and Julia, should be living near Birkenhead, Cheshire).

I have also attached the only photo I have of Arthur, in case anyone is good at matching faces!

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Brypye,

Any chance of getting a better, higher res image of the cap badge or shoulder titles. It's very hard to tell looking at this pic the regiment. The Cavalry regiments could be either The 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queens Bays) or The 13th Hussars. Possibly.

There are also few Yeomanry regiments who had cap badges that could possibly be contenders.

Sorry I can't be a little more specific, I'm sure someone may be along soon and have a better idea.

Cheers

Dan

Just my opinion, but the ears don't really match on both photos. Ears don't change much as we age, retaining their size and shape.

Hello

Thanks very much Dan. I don't have the original photo, although I could try asking for a higher res. Would the badge on the cap be the best way to identify the regiment? Thanks for the suggestions, I'll keep my eye out for them.

Yes I know what you mean about the ears, but I believe ears and noses do keep growing as we get older, so difficult to judge :/

Appreciate all replies

Hi Bryony,

The cap badge is, I find, the easiest way to find the regiment, also the collar tabs can help too. Some regiments had differences in small detail on the uniform etc. but these can be really difficult to work out from old black and white or sepia photos. Other clues can be gained sometimes from other details in the photo, or if you hold the original the back of the photo. Let me know if you do manage to get a higher res image, it may help.

Cheers

Dan.
