Walter Munt 1855-1940 name query help please

Postby Simon45 » Mon Apr 15, 2019 3:30 pm

Hi
Walter Munt , born 1855 in Hitchin, Baldock, Hertfordshire
Parents were William Munt and Sarah Munt

Walter died 1940 in Islington, London aged 85
The informant was his daughter M F Dafter

I do have his birth certificate and death certificate shown on here
(It shows Walter Munt on both )

In the censuses of 1861,71,81,91,01,1911 it states his name as Edward Munt

He married Eliza Brown in 1877 in Islington , London
She was a widow ( maiden name Gentle)
I have his marriage certificate , it shows him as Edward Munt

Why was he born Walter but Edward name on censuses and marriage...?

Thank you

Perhaps he just didn't like the name Walter and used the name Edward, but stuck to Walter for formal registrations

Yes I guess that’s the only reason
Don’t know weather to use Walter or Edward on my family tree ...?

Thank you

Have you searched for a baptism? His baptismal name may be different to his registered one. It isn't a frequent occurrence but neither is it particularly rare to find differences.

I suspect your Walter/Edward used Walter in events that may have required production of a birth certificate or where "legal" recognition might be presumed, and Edward in everyday life or where less formal identification was important, such as the census. If you are not using any software where a search may be required on a forename, I'd use both names, possibly Walter alias Edward or Walter Edward. Maybe the way forward is to use the name with the latest date - either his baptismal name versus registered name (at registration date).
