Avaline ooh no - that sends shivers down my spine. My Internet is playing up but will definitely have a look.

I've searched for Domestic Servant adverts for the by now single Mr Mason but haven't found anything.

There was speculation as to whether the Bates had a baby farm business going on in another group I've posted on previously...

Another avenue I'm exploring is whether either of the Masons' previous maids ended up pregnant - just trying to see if he may have had previous form.

If I was a celeb I'd have made a cracking episode of WDYTYA, wouldn't I?

Incidentally she didn't sell my grandmother - she kept and neglected her until 1921 when she went into the care of the Clewer Sisters

Ah yes, I remember the Clewer Sisters post.

Begs the question of what happened to the baby born in 1907 though, possibly also called Winifred.

She died at 3 days old - no mention of this in any of the newspaper reports though

Yes, I can see that now. I looked under her forename which is why I didn't spot it.

A very sad story all round.
