Hi All
My sister and i have been up several blind alleys looking for George Frederick Helsden's father James, we still cannot find any info or direct connection to GFH as to where he was living from his birth in 1822 up until signing up for the Royal Navy in 1841.
Our question is when GFH joined the Royal Navy would he be required to complete an application/entry form if so does anybody have any idea who would hold a copy of it and whether it is possible to view it. Our hope is that it would at least give us an indication as to where GFH was living.

The basic details of what's been kept are on

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help ... p-to-1913/

Initially, at the time your chap entered the RN, :

"The Royal Navy did not keep individual service records on ratings before 1853, nor did it maintain comprehensive registers of personnel, so records before 1853 are particularly patchy."

So it doesn't look like the admission form is likely. But have a read through that Guide to see if there's anything that you haven't tried yet. Some of those things, like Allotment Registers, we have found, unless I'm getting mixed up with another case. Maybe you should print it off and tick off the bits that you've done.

Hi Adrian
Many thanks for your response to my last post, my sister and I have already been through the Allotment Registers but your suggestion of printing the guide off and going through it line by line is an excellent idea and that is what we will try next.
The problem is with the situation we find ourselves in is that we have been stuck on trying to find GFH father James for so many years without success that you go stare crazy.

Kind regards
Kevin

George Helsden
Birth Date: 24 Dec 1822
Birth Place: At Sea off the Tagus
Service Number: 1853

Do you already have that?
