James Hemmings occupation?

Postby phsvm » Tue Mar 19, 2019 6:13 pm

Can any one help me in working out what James Hemmings occupation was in 1871 please?

James Hemmings, born 1854 (although the census has his dob as 1855) in Abingdon, Berkshire. Living with his parents Thomas and Louise and numerous siblings in Ock Street, Abingdon.

By 1881 he's a general labourer but his wife is listed as a machinist and his mother and sisters were spinners so is his occupation something to do with textiles? There was a leather works in the town at the time.

Hi,

In 1871 the census has James as a wool draper, which is a seller of cloth for clothing.
Interestingly, also in 1871 his brother, George, was listed as being a fellmonger, which would have been a dealer in hides and skins, which James would become according to the 1891 census.

Thanks. That would make sense. Abingdon had quite a big leather industry back in the day.

That's very interesting to know, I spent seven years of my childhood living in Radley and I never knew that at all!
