Not to flog a dead horse, but I don't see John William Tranmere in the 1911 census either. Unless he's been transcribed incorrectly.

Update: now this is very interesting:

In John William Tranmere's military record on FMP, he has an alias! It's George Herbert (?) COATES and his trade upon enlistment was Groom. And he served in South Africa from 1909-1910.

According to the FMP image, he died in Hull in 1921. Now there is a George H COATES who died in the Sculcoates district in 1921.

Makes me wonder if Joseph F Purcell had an alias, as well. :?

Indeed. But no thanks for mine!
There's an interesting newspaper report from the summer of 1912. I'll attach some of it, the article is longer.

Thanks MoVidgor, and Adrian B38. I asked the Canterbury library and CWCG some time ago about the Chartham memorial and they have no details of the death . Chartham Parish Council are checking their archives for the original notification of JF Purcell's death. He is listed on the Chartham Memorial as Navy, and I think he may have died in the Atlantic when his ship went down. Hopefully Chatham Parish Council will have the answer, In which case he is not the man I am looking for. Had not seen Tranmer info about enlisting in 1914,only someone who enlisted in 1920.
Hi janbee, sorry I did not notice your reply. Thanks for the paper clipping. Purcell lived in Mill Row with my wife's Grand Mother from the marriage date up to his alleged leaving for Ireland. Did yo see a date for the paper clipping?

Whitstable Times, 3 August 1912
Page 7

Mentions of Lieutenant Diggle of the 9th Lancers, and Albert George Mew, a groom who also worked for Diggle. MP was accused of stealing Mew's coat. In April Purcell had been suffering from influenza at Chartham, and Mew had lent it to him.
According to the report, Michael Purcell was married with one child. Had been in the army about ten years.

Found J W Tranmere (a/k/a George Herbert Coates) in the 1911 census. He's indeed a Private with the 9th Lancers at Canterbury Barracks -- name mis-transcribed as "John William Franmere" on FMP.

Thank you MoVidger & ianbee. Good information. Think I will check 1901 census for MP & prison records in Kent for August 1912. You all have made a break through for me, and given me more directions to work in. I really am grateful. From your answers FMP seems to be getting better than Ancestry. Is that a fair comment?
Sorry for any misspellings. When I scroll down through the answers . I have 10 green horizontal lines going through the messages, which makes it difficult to read sometimes

Hi
Findmypast may well be giving better answers for this, but I'm not with them. For UK military records I think it is probably better than ancestry, i.e. the army pension records. Ancestry index them but you have to subscribe to fold3 to actually see them.

You can get that 1912 newspaper article for free if you just register with the British Newspaper Archive (it's quick and painless to do) They give you three free page views, which you can also download.

Of course newspapers sometimes get names wrong! But there being a Michael Purcell in the 9th Lancers at Lydd in 1911 suggests they haven't on this occasion.

The 9th/12th Royal Lancers Museum website has a record of a M Purcell, reg. no. 5107, among those who embarked on TMS Dufferin, 1906.

What great finds!

As Ianbee doesnt have FMP I've looked for Michael Purcell's record and he attested 30 Dec 1902 aged 18yrs & 9months. Description states 5ft 5ins, 119 lbs, fresh complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair and with a large mole to the left side of his nose. Does this match with the photographs you have?

He attested into the Royal Irish Regiment but was transferred to the 9th Lancers on 1 Aug 1906, and discharged 11 Oct 1912 because of the conviction mentioned, having been sentenced on 30 July 1912 to 2 months & 1 month consecutively.

ADDED: His occupation prior to enlistment was a groom
