Penguard Rd., Peckham

Postby fhb » Sat Feb 16, 2019 6:01 am

I've found an outgoing passenger list for 14 Dec 1923 Alfred Hillier and it states he was from 10 Penguard Rd., Peckham. I cannot find where this might be. Anyone any ideas?

I presume you know Peckham is in South East London :D
I’ve tried modern A-Z of London, as well as one for 1888 and neither has Penguard Road. Perhaps it was a short-lived street name, and was changed to something else.

I found this site that lists old street names, but without success (see https://www.maps.thehunthouse.com/Stree ... _Names.htm)

Yes I do know Peckham. Like you I couldn't find it anywhere. I checked my Bictorian A to Z too plus my earlier London books. I did find Vanguard St in Deptford but that might be pushing it! I also looked at Pengarth but I'm not convinced.

Funny you should say that, I thought of Vanguard Street too. Pengarth Street is also a possibility. Depends how strong an accent he had.

BTW, I wonder if he is related to my Hilliers, who came from Sutton, Leatherhead and Bookham, in Surrey?
