Prison Records

I’ve come across the bare details of a court case that resulted in a short prison term for someone who may or may not be ‘one of mine’. What I know is just the entry in a sentencing log so name, county, date of trial, charge and sentence. How would I discover more, specifically how can I discover if this is someone on my tree?

Have you looked for newspaper accounts? I found very detailed accounts of a divorce hearing and a trial in which an ancestor was a witness in local and national newspapers.

That’s a good idea Brunes08. It wasn’t very scandalous, building within a curtilidge, whatever that entailed. As it was, I was able to eliminate my chap by a sheer fluke - the prison term covered a census night and I found my chap at home and the prisoner locked up in Aylesbury prison. Phew!
