Emily Cooper 1847 or 1849

Postby lottie's mum » Sun Feb 10, 2019 7:48 pm

Emily Cooper married John James in 1874. She was 26 years of age and her father was Mark Cooper.

Census records all show born on Isle of Wight and vary between IOW, Ryde and Newport. Ages on these, marriage and death give births between 1847 and 1849

A potential 1851 Census have a Mark Cooper age 27, Mary age 23 and Emily age 4.
A potential marriage of Mark Cooper to Mary Cook on Isle of Wight in 1848

I'm torn between these 2 birth records:

COOPER, EMILY - Mother's maiden name: COOK

GRO Reference: 1849 D Quarter in WINCHESTER & HURSLEY Volume 07 Page 279

COOPER, EMILY - No mother's maiden name
GRO Reference: 1847 M Quarter in ISLE OF WIGHT Volume 08 Page 225

I've got myself into knots trying to follow both Emilys through census, marriage etc but unsuccessful so would welcome any thoughts.

Thanks Pauline

The 1851 clearly gives her age as 4 so I'd be inclined to go with the 1847 as its also in the right location.

Thank you to both of you. I'm going down the 1847 one which strangely enough isn't on the Isle of Wight site!! I think there is a lot to get to the bottom of with this family. 1851 Census has a Mary as Mark's wife and 1861 has a Sarah but can't find any death for Mary or marriage for Sarah - probably going to need a ticket to Ryde

Your last post says the 1841 census shows Mary as Mark's wife and in 1851, his wife is shown as Sarah. No relationships are stated in 1841, and Mark wasn't married then. In the 1851 census, there's Mark b 1824 Gatcombe, Mary b 1828 Hampshire, and Emily b 1847 IOW.

If Mark Cooper married Mary Cook MQ 1848 IOW, and their daughter Emily is the one on the 1851 census as born 1847, then she was born a year before their marriage. If she was born after the marriage, then she wasn't born 1847.

There is a very good family history society on the IOW (https://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk)

For a small membership fee you can obtain access to various searchable databases and can ask a question of members.

Following on from the above, there is this entry in the GRO indices

COOK, EMILY -
GRO Reference: 1848 S Quarter in ISLE OF WIGHT Volume 08 Page 215 which you have already identified.

When applying for the birth entry you could always state mother/ father needs to be????

Sorry, I've now amended the dates on the post - it should have said 1851 shows Mary and 1861 shows Sarah. Regarding Emily's birth before their marriage - this is why I was torn, however I have found that a lot of my ancestors married after children were born (including Emily who also lied on 1871 census that she was married!) They didn't make our life easy did they. Thank you for your thoughts.

UPDATE - I've received the pdf today and she was born 14th December 1846 to Mark Cooper and Mary Cook before their marriage. I now need to figure out what happened to Mary who disappears after the 1851 census and Mark and Sarah who disappear after the 1861 census.
