Seeking death details of Richard James Paice

Postby Jaymacgee » Mon Jan 14, 2019 7:59 pm

Hello, trying to reach the end of a trail.

Richard James Paice
B 1864 Weymouth to Thomas and Sarah Paice
Moved to Bermondsey with them before 1871

Richard was Gt Gt grandfather. He had things bad in the Southwark / Bermondsey / Rotherhithe area of London at the of the 1800s. He is in and out of workhouses, with and without his wife a Sara Anne ( Annie) and children Thomas, George and Ada Annie. Latterly he is variously noted as having no home, having absconded and having been discharged at own request. Last definite ‘sighting’ is 1900, with a possible in 1903. Son noted elsewhere as ‘abandoned’. Then on my gr grandfathers marriage certificate he is noted as deceased. However I cannot find anything about his death. Given his life story as I understand it I could believe he died alone on the streets of London and no one knew who he was. Is there anything I am missing that might tell me otherwise?

Hmm. The Weymouth birth tallies and dates are Might he have remarried after the death of his wife Sarah? (He didn’t sound much of a catch, wonder what Naomi saw in him!) can’t seem to find a marriage certificate and length of marriage is ‘not known’. He says he has no children. Maybe they weren’t actually married? Maybe he was leaving his terrible past behind?

The number of children from the present marriage were to be recorded next to the wife - so I suspect none is correct.

NK (Not Known) has been entered by the enumerator because I assume Richard had left it blank - possible as they weren't married?

Ooh this is interesting, thank you both. I think we’re on to something! ‘My’ Richard James Paice is noted in the 1871 census as being born in Wyke, and I know his parents were married in Wyke Regis which is near Weymouth. The 1911 census when you look at the actual script says he was born in ‘White Region’, Weymouth. I feel that White Region could be a misheard version of Wyke Regis - what do you think?
