death Caroline Webb nee Slaymaker

Postby katebenn » Sun Jan 13, 2019 8:03 pm

Caroline Slaymaker was b 1834 in Bray, Berkshire
Married Jacob Webb on 22 Nov 1856 at Bray
Jacob died in 1909 aged 73 in Wokingham RD, Berks having been at Woodley in 1901
I think Caroline in 1911 is aged 76 widow OAP with Alice Wallis as 'wife's mother' in Maidenhead
BUT I can't find a death registration for her
Any ideas?

I searched for Caroline Webb deaths between 1911 and 1931, where born between 1932 and 1936 and found the following...

1914 Bristol, Gloucestershire
1916 Kings Norton, Worcestershire
1919 Brighton, Sussex
1925 Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire
1925 Mitford, Norfolk
1926 Bradfield, Berkshire
1931 Dursley, Gloucestershire

With a similar search in the 1911 census, eliminating those who I found in the same area, I was left with the following two deaths.
1919 Brighton, Sussex
1926 Bradfield, Berkshire

It is not unknown for a widow to relocate to be closer to another relative, or even retire down to the coast. I would suggest taking investigations a bit further with these two.

Whilst Caroline WEBB is included on the 1911 census as living in Maidenhead, the date of the census being 2 April 1911,Alice and the family sailed for Canada arriving 1 August 1911 some 4 months later!

Caroline Webb is not on the ship's manifest therefore the old lady may have been institutionalised or living with another family member.

There is a burial at Greenwich dated 27 June 1913 on However I cannot see the relevant entry in the GRO death indices

I've dismissed the Greenwich Burial as this Caroline Webb was aged 66 making her born 1847!

Caroline's daughter Alice was not brought up by her but by Jacob's sister Hannah & her husband Abraham Grove

Caroline's daughter Alice & children certainly emigrated to Canada - there is a ref to Alice & husband Amos for 1921 census in Canada (I don't have Ancestry world wide membership) & their deaths in 1946 & 1922 respectively in Montreal.
Amos must have gone to Canada before the family; in 1910 electoral register gives him at Powney Road, Maidenhead where Alice & family are in 1911 & Alice is 'head' married
I think Caroline's death is 1926 aged 90 in Bradfield, Berks as her son Benjamin Webb is living in Bradfield in the 1939 register.
Thanks for all your help
