Doreen Johnston - South Africa

Postby LintottM » Sun Jan 13, 2019 7:26 pm

Hi, this is my first post as a new member!

My grandmother Doreen Agnes Johnston - born 22nd December 1917 in Johannesburg met my grandfather John Daniel Jones while he was in the merchant navy during ww2.

They married in Capetown and once the war was over she made the long journey by ship to Southampton and then on to Nefyn a small village in North Wales to start family life.

I understand that both her parents died when she was young, her mother died of breast cancer and I think her father in a railway accident. She was then brought up by her grandparents who had also died by the time she was 8 and then she went to live with cousins.

Has anyone been able to research anything in South Africa as I am aware they give priority to those that live in South Africa for records/research.

I think her father was called Malcolm and I believe one of her grandfathers was Scottish!

Any help on where I need to go next with this would be greatly appreciated as it seems an interesting history.

Many Thanks

Mary

Hopefully you've seen the 1926 probate record on FS for Doreen's mother Ellen Sophia Johnston. The document image gives her parent's names, too. However, the writing is a bit difficult to read. Looks like Malcolm and Ellen married in Rhodesia.

To further research Malcolm's ancestors, use Scotland's People: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
However, you'll need to pay for searches and to view images. But it's worth it.

Yes I saw the probate record for Doreen's mother.

So sad that both her parents died within months of each other.

Rhodesia was under British rule? On the front of the file it said that Ellen Johnston was british born.

Its a shame that I can't make out her parents names.

I will definitely look into the Scottish history. I wonder why they went to Africa?

I appreciate all your help!

Thank you.

I have found Malcolm's birth register. Looks like Duncan and Agnes were married in South Africa and were back in Scotland when Malcolm was born!

From the Probate image, I can just about make out the parents names as:
Schalk Willem Britz/Brits (deceased)
Elizabeth Johanna Britz/Brits (deceased)
Daughter Ellen Sophia's birthplace is Vryburg, Bechuanaland.

FamilySearch.org has South Africa, Free State Dutch Reformed Church Records baptism images for Ellen Sophia's siblings, with parents listed as:

Andreis Schalk Willem Brits
Elizabeth Johanna Brits (nee Liebenberg)

Thank you!

My attempts at searching through this record is yielding no results! Not sure what I am doing wrong but I cannot find the baptism records in the collection you refer to.

I found the baptisms by accident. In the main Search screen, I had entered the parent's names in the Parent Name fields, and that's how they came up. Don't think I put in any birth year parameters, but may have designated the birth place as South Africa. Several baptism records appeared, which include images with handwritten details.

FYI: The spelling of the mother's maiden name varies: Liebenberg and Lisbenberg

See below for the baptism links:

I did find them searching as you did. Unfortunately the links don't work so I have to search. But at least I know they are there!

Hopefully I will find the marriage.

Yesterday I found the joint will made by Ellen Sophia and Malcolm Johnston in 1923. Interestingly as well as stating that ellen was formerly Britz, it also said 'widow RAAF' - could this mean she was married before also?
