Nicholas Jones, born in Barbados, lived in Liverpool

Postby MikePhillips50 » Sat Jan 12, 2019 9:54 pm

I am hoping someone can help me. I am researching Nicholas Jones. He was born approximately 1872 in Barbados. But at some point moved to Liverpool. I have his marriage to Frances Clifton in 1899, in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, I also have him on the 1911 Census and 1938 Register.

His marriage record identifies Robert Jones as his father, who is dead by the time of the wedding. Robert was a solider which has led me to think that maybe his father was serving in Barbados when he was born, but I maybe wrong.

I know that Nicholas was a sailor, and have several crew lists for him

Can anyone help me track him back earlier than 1899, or, ideally to make the link to his father Robert?

Hi MoVidger, thank you for your reply. That sounds very promising doesn't it! Can I ask would soldiers in barracks appear on the census? and if so would it be there home address or at barracks? (obviously in this case I am wondering if I would expect to see them in Aldershot?)

Thank you again.

I cannot see a Nicholas Jones listed on the Index for 'Army Returns- Births-1796 to 1880" also known as Chaplains Returns.

However there are some other named Jones listed for Barbados for the period you are interested in, so possible siblings. There is also the possibility to consider that he was actually baptised under another Christian name, but known as Nicholas.

Troops in England and Wales should appear in the England and Wales Census, but sometimes cannot be located. The 1911 England and Wales Census was the first to contain soldiers stationed overseas, but again, not all appear.

Cheers

Hi Maureen,

Thank you for that, it sounds like the "Chaplain returns" are the place to look.

Thank you for your help!!!

Obviously this chap (service number 365) needs further investigating. In the meantime, there is the following mention in the book "More Monumental Inscriptions: Tombstones of the British West Indies":

There is an Ancestry message board thread from 2010 discussing another soldier with the 29th, also found in the 1861 census in Farnborough. According to this thread, the 29th Foot moved to the following:

1863 the Regiment moved from North Camp [commonly linked to Aldershot] to Ireland
1865 Malta
1867 Canada
1869 West Indies
1873 Ireland
1875 Jersey (Channel Islands)
1876 Chatham
1877 Aldershot

The Robert Jones mentioned by MoVidger is probably this one:

Robert Jones aged 31 buried 16 Jul 1872 at St. Ann's Garrison, Barbados

Or aged 32 according to FindaGrave
