Mrs Scatchard later received an award for saving Gladys's life.
No mention that Gladys died in hospital!

Thank you to all who have replied in such detail and solved my problems for me. A real skeleton in the cupboard !!
I have looked at both the births and deaths mentioned and had the Hendon death as a possibility but wasn't able to take the next steps. I was confused by the re-registration of the birth and the marriage happening so soon after. The address is correct for the family, I used to spend my summer holidays at 3,Thomas Terrace, Dowlais with my grandmother.
My grandmother would be mortified if she knew that her granddaughters now know about her not being married when she had Gladys. She was a very proper upright person, went to church on Sundays and was a perfect example to her other children and grandchildren. It must have felt like retribution when Gladys died.
I should now be able to find out where Gladys is buried and whether or not she went back to Wales.
Many thanks again and Merry Christmas.

I've had to re-register on the forum so my user name is different.
I am still searching for a burial for Gladys Davies who died from her injuries in July 1929.
I have tried all the cemeteries in the area and deceased on line but can't find any record of her burial. As far as the family are concerned she didn't go back to Wales
I've also looked for the inquest findings but they were destroyed in the 1950's apparently so that doesn't help. I've also looked for her employers online and despite having the address I can't find the family.Their name is unusual -- 'Scatchard'. All the Scatchards I've found have been in Yorkshire.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Gill

Hi
There is a residence called "Janremi" listed next to Edgar and Florence Baldwin at "Pasadena", Golders Green Road, Hendon
1928 electoral register, it is written Janreni with Arthur + Zoe Drew there.
Then Janremi drops off for a while, until the early thirties or so.
So either the Scatchards weren't there very long, or were ineligible to vote.

However!
The 1930 London telephone directory comes to the rescue!
Herbert F Scatchard at Janremi

In 1931 he is listed in Purley!

There's a birth in Hendon in 1929 of a Frances E Scatchard.

And, looking for her and her family, it seems as though they may have been American

Thanks for all that info Ian. I did see the passenger lists but wasn't sure if they were the same person. Also the newspaper mentions that Mrs Scatchard was young. Looks as if her being too unwell to attend the inquest was due to 'Francis' being on the way.
It would not have occured to me to look at the phone book, thank you for that hint. My only problem now is the burial. I'm going to try the local Historical Societies for Surrey that have been mentioned in the magazine this month. They might help or can tell me where cemetery records are likely to be.
Will let you know of any success, I must bow to your experience !
Many thanks
Gill
