Baptism James Marlow c1853

Postby katebenn » Sun Dec 16, 2018 8:12 pm

I'm trying to solve the birth registration & baptism of James Marlow s/o Thomas Marlow & Mary Ann Shaw in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
I know that Thomas & Mary had a son James b 6 Dec 1848 & baptised in Nuneaton on 28 Mar 1852 prior to his death & burial on 9 Apr 1852.
They then had a 2nd son called James c1853 but I can't find any registration for him or baptism.
Census always states he was born in Nuneaton, although the family are in Rugby in 1861 & James is aged 8 years.
On his death in 1933 he is aged 77 which makes him born c1856
Can anyone shed any light on this please?

The first James was born 6th December 1848, wasn't baptised until 28 March 1852, and died in April 1852. When the next boy was born c1853, is it possible the parents thought that as James 2 had the same name, same parents, and same birthplace, one registration would do for both? And have you checked baptisms for a few years after his birth?

Hi,
I'm afraid this is not him.
James married Bessie Martin in 1877 in Nottingham; he was living in Nottingham St Marys in 1881; a french polisher.
I think sdup26's explanation is the most likely at present. Its still a mystery though & I can't find a leter baptism either.

Are you absolutely certain that James is the son of Thomas & Mary Ann? I see that Emma Jane is later described as their daughter when she was, in fact, their granddaughter.

Is Thomas named as father on James' marriage certificate?

Yes; father Thomas Marlow, traveller - a china & earthernware dealer. I have a copy of the cert.
Emma Jane is indeed Thomas & Mary Ann's granddaughter, the BBd/o of Ann Marlow
