Why not apply to the Ministry of Defence for his service record?

I agree with Peter Kent. I applied for my dads service record last year. It costs £30 but is well worth it. Good luck..

I think Army records may be fine, but I applied for my grandfather’s RAF service record this year and they couldn’t find it. That’s with providing name, dob, service number and details of several postings.

I've tried on ancestry but to no avail so maybe that's the way forward...I have no service number just a name and DOB and death certificate

Hi, You have everything you need. it is date of birth OR service number, only one is mandatory.
You need a copy of the death certificate and proof of next of kin. Don't be put off by the forms, they appear daunting but when you get into them they are very easy.As I said in my previous post, they are well worth the money. It takes a little while for them to come but not too bad.Good luck.
Grace. :)
