Mary Elizabeth GILBERT

Mon Nov 12, 2018 4:13 pm

I am trying to find the death of Mary Elizabeth GILBERT, née Llewellyn.

I know little of her birth, other than she claimed to be 20 when she married James GILBERT at All Hallows in Tottenham on 03 Sep 1893.

In the 1901 and 1911 censuses she gives her age as 28 and 36, indicating a birth in 1873 or 1875. In 1901 the couple were at Union Road, Tottenham and in 1911 at Tenterden Road, Tottenham. The birthplace of Wales might be misleading, as there is a Mary Elizabeth Llewellyn mentioned in the 1891 census living at Western Road in Tottenham, aged 19 who was born in Yorkshire. Given the date of 1891, just 2 years before her marriage, it would seem likely that this is the same woman.

The 1911 census is the last record I have of Mary Elizabeth. Her husband, James died aged 62 on 12 Aug 1933 at Lorenco Road, Tottenham.

I would really like to find out what happened to Mary Elizabeth.

In case you haven't already ruled this one out:
Mary Elizabeth Gilbert, aged 48, died in London Hospital, buried 12.05.1919 (born c1871) City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery Registers 1841-1966.

I think I am ultimately to blame for all the confusion. To clarify:

I have sent for the death certificate for the burial in 1919 found sdup26, which I think might be correct given that as pointed out she wasn't with James in 1922.

The birthplaces of both Mary Elizabeth and her father remain problematic, despite a lot of people attempting to track them down.

If the brass finisher living in Lambeth in 1881 is indeed her father, then he would appear to be the William Robert Llewellyn born in Aston in 1847 [Q2 1847 Aston 16 185 MMN LINWORTH]. The problem with this is that the William LLEWELLYN living in Edmonton in 1891 claims to have been born in Langellen, Denbighshire in Wales. In 1901, the William LLEWELLYN living in Edmonton - married to a different woman - is born in Birmingham, as is the one living in Edmonton in 1911. A William Robert LLEWELLYN died in Edmonton in 1932. I think these are all the same person, but the varying birthplaces complicate matters.

As for Mary Elizabeth herself, the one who appears to have married James Gilbert in 1893, seems according to the 1891 census to have been born in Yorkshire. The Elizabeth (no Mary) living in Lambeth in 1881 was born in Bradford, Yorkshire. However, following her marriage in 1893, her birthplace in both 1901 and 1911 is given as Wales.

If anyone can clarify the confusion over their birthplaces, I would be very grateful.

With regard to the earlier post by sdup26, I have now received the PDF of her death and unfortunately it is the wrong Mary Elizabeth. This one was the wife of Edward Henry GILBERT, a carman.
