Mary Elizabeth GILBERT

Postby SDV » Mon Nov 12, 2018 3:39 pm

I am trying to find the death of Mary Elizabeth GILBERT, née Llewellyn.

I know little of her birth, other than she claimed to be 20 when she married James GILBERT at All Hallows in Tottenham on 03 Sep 1893.

In the 1901 and 1911 censuses she gives her age as 28 and 36, indicating a birth in 1873 or 1875. In 1901 the couple were at Union Road, Tottenham and in 1911 at Tenterden Road, Tottenham. The birthplace of Wales might be misleading, as there is a Mary Elizabeth Llewellyn mentioned in the 1891 census living at Western Road in Tottenham, aged 19 who was born in Yorkshire. Given the date of 1891, just 2 years before her marriage, it would seem likely that this is the same woman.

The 1911 census is the last record I have of Mary Elizabeth. Her husband, James died aged 62 on 12 Aug 1933 at Lorenco Road, Tottenham.

I would really like to find out what happened to Mary Elizabeth.

No, their son Arthur is the informant. From memory, he was 2 in 1911.

One of the witnesses to the marriage Robert Curtis was b 1872 Tottenham

In 1891 he can be found with his grandparents John Clevely aged 72 living at 5 Brunswick Court
RG12 1067 51

Living at no 17 is a Thomas Marshall 23 b Peckham RG12 1067 45

Have you noted that Mary may be educated as she is able to clearly sign her name?

From the marriage details (father William Llewellyn, Brass finisher), this looks like her in 1881
Piece 590 folio 43 page 48
Lambeth
1 Jacksons Gardens
William Llewellyn Head 33 Brass finisher Warwicksh Birmingham
Sarah E Llewellyn Wife 28 Beds Luton
Elizabeth Llewellyn Daur 8 Yorkshire Bradford
Ann Llewellyn Daur 5 Beds Luton
William Llewellyn Son 4 Surrey Lambeth
Louisa Llewellyn Daur 1 Surrey Lambeth

In the 1891 census, William Llewellyn the brass finisher (now born in Wales) and wife (Elizabeth), and rest of the family minus the eldest daughter are at 5 Coles Avenue, Edmonton (piece 1082 folio 66 pages 17 + 18)

First Tottenham electoral register available to us from after the war is Autumn 1922 (I know LMA does not hold those for 1918-21)
James Gilbert is at 37 Lorenco Road.
But no Mary Elizabeth.

It's been bugging me. I knew that Llewellyn family was familiar!

Ian - you are right I have raised this before but sometimes new information comes to light. The electoral register information is new to me. I still don’t see the significance however of Timothy Marshall.

Sorry I should have mentioned the Lambeth census which I had already found. The real mystery, apart from where she is post 1911, is where was she born. Wales or Bradford? Her father if this is the correct family does not come from Wales!

No it is the my mind process....on the 1893 marriage cert Mary states she lived at 17 Brunswick Court...I was demonstrating that in 1891 Thos Marshall lived at that address!

Sorry, I just realised that there are two concurrent threads. I must have pressed submit twice.

With regard to the birthplace of Mary Elizabeth's father, I think that this could be him: Q2 1847 Aston 16 185 [LINWORTH].

The death posted in the other thread for Mary Elizabeth could well be correct. I think I will follow it up.

With regard to her birth, I cannot find an appropriate one in Bradford or Yorkshire. There is a possible Mary Elizabeth LLEWELLYN born in Haverfordwest [Q4 1870 Haverfordwest 11a 758 MMN JOHN], but I have no idea whether or not this is correct.
