Joseph Clutterbuck - action man!

Postby DK-T » Thu Nov 08, 2018 9:24 am

Searching for birth records & parents for Joseph Clutterbuck, born c.1804-1811 (1841 census gives age as 30, 1842 burial register gives age as 38).
Joseph was my 3x great grandfather, he lived in Croydon, Surrey in 1841 (listed on 1841 census as not being born in the county) and worked as a policeman. His duties clearly involved working on the railway, which is how he died, in adventurous circumstances, in 1842:
‘A fatal accident happened on Sunday, on the Croydon and Brighton Railway. As a train passed over Croydon Common, a Mr. Cramer got out of a third-class carriage, and walked over the roofs of two carriages, to a first-class carriage. The guard, Joseph Clutterbuck, left his seat to warn the passenger of his danger ; and as he walked over the roof for that purpose, he was dashed against a bridge, falling back on the coupling-chains. His head was shattered to pieces, and he died instantly. A Coroner's Jury have returned a verdict of "Accidental Death." The Spectator, 30th July 1842, page 10’
I would love to find out who Joseph’s parents were, where he was born etc. I’ve been researching my family history since the early 1990s and Joseph is a fascinating ‘brick wall’ that I’d love to resolve.

The 1841 census rounded the ages for adults down to the nearest 0 or 5 years. So Joseph could have been up to 34 years in the census. Later census returns recorded the correct age - always supposing people told the truth!

The marriage entry is on line.
21 July 1832 Jos was a Bachelor and declared OTP by Banns...witnesses are likely to be Church representatives.....

If born circa 1811, he would be around 21 when married......

I tried http://www.familysearch.org for the birth/baptism of a Joseph Clutterbuck from 1800-1812 in England, no county selected, and several baptisms came up around 1805/06, all in Gloucestershire. Tried gbnames.publicprofiler.org and the surname Clutterbuck has its biggest concentration in Gloucestershire.

Joseph acted as a witness for the wedding above his in the Banns register - probably doesn't mean much, but interesting.

Daughter Emma's birth was 1838, - after formal registration started and GRO index confirms mother's maiden name as Musgrove

Worth checking, although Joseph's 1841 Surrey census entry says he wasn't born in the county.

I suspect that even then Southwark, may not have been considered as Surrey by many

I believe the actor Andrew Lincoln's real surname is Clutterbuck. Ask WDYTYA to do an episode on him.
