Lilian Beatrice Wareham

Postby skemp » Fri Nov 02, 2018 4:53 pm

Hi, I am looking for some guidance. I have received a copy of my grandmothers birth certificate (born 1919 in Hastings). It has the mother listed as Lilian Beatrice Wareham. We were told that she died around the time of the childbirth and my nan's father (who was already married) took the child and raised her with his wife, until he left her with the child and went back to Canada. I can't find any Lilian Beatrice Wareham that died around that time. The only Lilian Beatrice Wareham that I can see that could possibly be the mother was born in Kent in 1891 but I've not had any DNA matches with any people in the tree I've created for her. I don't know where to go next. Any ideas? thanks

I'm a little confused. Searching 1919 births in Hastings with the surname Wareham mentioned brings up two females:

Vera Chamberland mmn Wareham
Marguerite E Wareham mmn Mann

Is one of these your grandmother? If so then either the birth or the death of her mother would be in a surname other than Wareham, but your post suggests that your Great Grandmother was not married.

Could the death of Lilian Beatrice Chamberlain in 1920 in Wandsworth be connected?

Hi, yes Vera Chamberland was my grandmother. Chamberland was her fathers name and the birth certificate has the mother down as Lilian Beatrice - it says Chamberland, formerly Wareham. However I don't believe she was married to Alphonse Chamberland despite what it says on the birth certificate. I will investigate the 1920 in Chamberlain a bit further and see if there is a link there. thanks

Hi, thank you.
Yes that is them. I think they must have gone on a trip to Canada which is where Alphonse is from when my nan (Vera) was little and this is them returning back to the UK.

Mary was the lady that brought her up, her adopted mother, and her birth certificate said her birth mother was Lilian Beatrice Wareham who I can't trace.

I've seen that Marriage to Alphonse on the internet but wasn't sure if it was theirs or not. but it's the only one I could find. From my research I believe Mary was British (maiden name Poupard).

On the document returning to the UK it mentions FA POUPARD as a grandparentand an address is Norwood...what I cannot fathom out is why Mary would be in N Dakota......I ma certain it is the correct marriage as Mary was considerably older than Alphonse.

I also wondered is Alphonse had other names so records couls be under those names. The marriage document suggests he signed up for the CEF

I looked for Lilian B nee Wareham / Chamberland and agree that the Sevenoaks birth and Wandsworth death are the only likely candidates.

Thanks. Yes that is his family. He was in the Canadian army and I have managed to get hold of his army file. It names Mary as his spouse and lists her as being in south london in England so all fits. The grandfather on the register you sent is Frederick Abraham who lived in south London so it's definitely the right group of people.
In relation to WAREHAM, I agree. On all the family trees I have looked at that have her listed, none of them have a deceased date for her. I will order the certificate of the Lilian B CHAMBERLAIN from 1920 to see if that gives me any further info.
Thanks for your help.
