My own grannie has a somewhat similar story to yours. She was born in 1915 and was brought up by her natural father, and was under the impression that her mother had died (her parents weren't married).

The piece of information that finally helped me track down her mother was the address information she gave in column 7 on grannie's birth certificate.

I wasted a lot of time trying to find my great-grandmother because I assumed the name she gave was her maiden name, however, it turned out that was her married name (her husband was killed at Ypres in 1914)

It wasn't until the release of the 1911 census that I was able to eventually find my great-grandmother, living at the address she had given on my grannie's birth certificate, under her maiden name.

I also then discovered that she had married for a second time, in the 1920s, and not died in child-birth as we had thought!

I suppose, what I'm trying to say is, don't assume anything (like I did). Your great-grandmother's name on the certificate could be a married name, any address mentioned may be a family address, and the information about her death could be wrong.

I wish you the best of luck, and don't give up!

Thank you all for your posts. I'm finding the information really helpful. If the Wandsworth death is the correct one it's very interesting the place where she died is only about a mile from where my family live now.

I had a small breakthrough yesterday in relation to the Lilian Beatrice Wareham who was born in Orpington. I had created a separate tree for her a few weeks back and had been adding various family members to it. I was looking through one of my DNA matches on Gedcom yesterday. I didn't recognise the name but was having a scan through their tree when I spotted a Wareham. They had the Orpington's Lilian Beatrice's sister listed on their tree. This brings me to the conclusion that the Orpington Lilian Beatrice Wareham is the correct one.

I now need a definite on the one that died.

Can I ask, what site did you get the burial information from ? I hadn't spotted it on Ancestry or My Heritage.

Thank you all so much.

I have just had the death certificate through for the Chamberlain in Wandsworth and i'm pleased to say it's the correct one, despite the name being spelt incorrectly. I'm delighted. It lists alphonse as the husband. thanks everyone your help.
