Richardson and Riley

Postby TypicallyBritish42 » Sun Oct 28, 2018 1:23 am

My main tree is Richardson, my Great Grandparents
Joseph Richardson and Mary (Ann) Riley, her parents were
William Riley c 1815 Ireland and Bridget Flynn c1830 also Ireland.
Mary Ann was born in Selby 1854. She married Joseph in 1874,
stumble here as on the cert. it gives her Fathers name as Thomas
Mittrale, Shoemaker, I have no idea who he is. Bridget lived in Selby
in 1851 (census) I have found no marriage for her. Has anyone a clue
as to where or how I can find this person and who he is? The Riley
family mainly resided in Durham.
The only info. I have found on a Thomas Mittrale is as below.
Thomas A?ram Mitral
Registration Year:1853
Registration Quarter:Apr-May-Jun Registration district:Sunderland
Parishes for this Registration District:

Inferred County:Durham Volume:10a Page:366
Any help even a hint would be good, I have my own theories anyone
else have one.

What is your evidence that her father is William RILEY?

What is that 1853 reference? Birth/Death/Marriage?

FreeBMD - 1874 Marriage is of Mary Ann MITTRALE

Does the marriage cert give her surname as RILEY?

Is this the birth?

I think that this is the 1853 entry referred to:

MITKALF, THOMAS ABRAM mmn ABRAM
GRO Reference: 1853 J Quarter in SUNDERLAND Volume 10A Page 366

Baptism:
Thomas Abraham Metcalf
15 Jul 1853, St. Peter's, Monk-Wearmouth, Durham, England
Father: Jonothan Metcalf
Mother: Hannah Metcalf

For anyone else searching, the marriage was 22 Sep 1874 at Snaith and is online. The surname for Mary Ann & her father is virtually illegible but could possibly be Mullvale rather than Mittrall.

Joseph Richardson is 25 & a Flax Dresser, father George. Mary Ann is 21, father Thomas. Both otp (Snaith). Wits Frank Tickers? Needham & Abraham Dimberline

In 1881 the couple is in Bishopsoil, Howden RD
Joseph Richardson 32 Flax Dresser born Thorne
Mary Ann 27 Flax Dryer born Selby
William 5 born Staddlethorpe
Joseph 4 born Crowle, Lincs
Margaret 1 born Gilberdyke

I can’t identify William’s birth, unless it was registered as Alma Richardson (male) MMN Riley, but I think this may be Joseph & Margaret:

RICHARDSON, JOSEPH mmn M'VALE GRO Ref: 1877 J Quarter in THORNE Volume 09C Page 749
RICHARDSON, MARGARET mmn RIBEY GRO Ref: 1879 D Quarter in HOWDEN Volume 09D Page 91

A later daughter, Charlotte, 1886, is definitely indexed with MMN Riley.

If the 1854 birth is her then she would have only been 20 when she married - I wonder if this is why her surname differs? She married out of parish, so perhaps her family would have stopped it had they known?

Well what I do know, I know Joseph Richardson and his line, I know the children names and dates.
Alma (William) Richardson mother maiden nameRiley, Margaret 1879 mother maiden name Ribey (poss) Typo or misspelt. John 1881 gives maiden name as Wasey?, Mary 1883 maiden name given as Riley,
Anne Elizabeth mother maiden name as Riley and Tom George RICHARDSON, TOM GEORGE
MCVALE (Mothers maiden name)
GRO Reference: 1896 J Quarter in HOWDEN Volume 09D Page 93

MCKAIL, MARY ANN
GROGAN
GRO Reference: 1854 D Quarter in SELBY Volume 09C Page 450
I have this info and the name of the Father is Patrick McKail, the mother Honor Grogan I don't feel that she would not know or get wrong the name of her Father which was given as Thomas on the marriage.
I have two deaths one for a Thomas McVale 1811 - 1876 died in Howden, says he was a Brush Hawker aged 65 and a death for a Mary McVale died 1899 Union Workhouse (the building still standing today) she was aged 67 and info gives her as Widow of Thomas McVale - Shoemaker, well that's the only part that fits his occ. on Mary Ann's marriage. I also have census which places my Grandfather William or Alma with a family of Rileys in Wallingfen.
1891census RG12; Piece: 3905; Folio: 12; Page: 7;
Canal Bank, Wallingfen, District 2, Schedule 50 4 rooms.
Mary Riley Head 62 Widow Laund. Washer Woman b. Ireland, Kilkenny
Thomas Riley son 28 single Brick Maker b. Ireland, Kilkenny
William Richardson nephew 15 single General Labourer b. Gilberdyke, Yks.
as you can see listed as the nephew.
Still not found a birth for Mary Ann as a McVale in Selby.
Such a conundrum. If anyone can help. It was easier when I thought of his Mother being a Riley.
