Missing baptisms and burials

Postby SDV » Fri Oct 05, 2018 5:13 pm

I am looking for the baptisms and burials for 4 young children born to John Barnes and Margaret Riddle between 1876 and 1880 in Godalming, Surrey.

The family were resident in Godalming throughout the lives of the four children. I have the birth certificates and death certificates for all four of the children. Their siblings were all baptised at St Peter and St Paul, Godalming, where I would have expected them to have been baptised and buried.

The four children were:

Rose BARNES - b 07 Feb 1876, d 02 Jan 1878
Louisa Alice BARNES - b 11 Sep 1877, d 09 Jun 1878
Mary BARNES - b 02 Apr 1879, d 02 Apr 1879 (premature birth)
Frederick BARNES - b 05 Feb 1880, d 06 May 1880

Any help gratefully received.

I don't know the area so treat these as ideas to consider and if you already have, fine.

Baptisms - is it possible that the 4 were baptized into a non-conformist chapel? You don't mention where these 4 are, timewise, compared to the others.

Burials - you should consider burials in a non-conformist chapel's graveyard or in a municipal (etc) cemetery.

As I said, you may have already thought of these options.

Re the missing burials
St Peter + St Paul's graveyard was closed in 1857 (other than use of existing graves, I expect)
http://www.godalming-jbc.gov.uk/Ancestry/burial-records

There's a link from there to a downloadable database for Nightingale Cemetery (opened 1857), which I think has what you want
i.e. Louisa Alice Barnes, buried 13 June 1878, age 9 months, Bridge Street

Database includes Eashing Cemetery (opened 1900)

The above site has answered nearly all of my problems and a few more I didn't include in the original post.

I now know that Mary Ann BARNES was not baptised. So the only outstanding problems are the baptisms of Rose BARNES and Louisa Alice BARNES.

Once again, thanks for all the help.
