William Thomas Beddall c1865 - c1925

Postby RobPurser » Wed Oct 03, 2018 2:09 pm

I am wondering if anyone can help me with a brick wall that is my great grandfather. William was born in Northchurch, Hertfordshire around 1865. I have him in the 1871 census (in St Mary, Hertfordshire) but not again until the 1911 census (in Kempston, Bedfordshire).

In between that period however he got married on 5 September 1894 in East Stonehouse, Devon to Bessie Jones who was born in Cornwall. He was 29.

I am wondering why I can't find him on Ancestry. I know he was in the army as he was a Private in the Bedfordshire Regiment and living in Raglan Barracks in (I think) Devonport in Plymouth when he got married. I don't know when he joined. I wondered if he may have been out of the country at the time of the 1881 and 1891 censuses possibly on active duty but I'm not sure.

Any help would be welcome.

Thanks.

His service record is on FindmyPast, transcribed as William Bedale.

It goes onto several pages, but to answer why you cant find him in the census:

Home: 5 June 1883 - 9 Sep 1884
East Indies: 10 Sep 1884 - 10 Feb 1892
Home: 11 Feb 1892 - 15 Dec 1899
S Africa: 16 Dec 1899 - 10 Apr 1901
Home: 11 Apr 1901 - 4 Jun 1908 (discharged)

Its a very informative document & includes his marriage to Bessie, the birth of his children & his parents.

ADDED: He attested 23 Jun 1883, Service No. 767, Bedfordshire Regiment (seems to be some confusion around dates, as service towards engagement has 23 June 1883 crossed out & replaced with 5th June)

Avaline,

That's brilliant. Thank you!

I need to get to the local library where I can access Find my Past.

Thanks again.

Hello Rob Purser,
Having seen your post re WTB I felt compelled to contact you. Not sure if it will be of any help...
I attended Burwood Primary school in NSW Australia and had a Miss Doreen Beddall as my teacher in ?1958 I have never heard the name again until your post. I do know Miss Beddall lived into her 90s.
Miss Beddall was a smallish woman, always wearing a tailored grey suit and pastel blouses with a small brooch at the neck. She was very strict indeed and loved music and literature.

I just wonder if the person you are seeking ended up in Australia and Doreen (how on earth dare I refer to her as such!) may have been one of his daughters....

Happy hunting.
