Lillie Euphemia Alice Dickson (born 28 July 1894 in Portsea)

Postby Eleanorsamwellchow » Tue Oct 02, 2018 7:05 am

I am looking for more details of were Lillie Euphemia Dickson was in 1901 and 1911.

I am also looking for the marriage of her mother and father and where they were in 1901 and 1911.

What I know

Lillie Euphemia Alice Dickson was born in Portsea Island on 28 July 1894. Her mother was Alice Dickson (nee Andrews) and her father was Robert Dickson who was a stoker with the Royal Navy. Lillie went by the name Alice and married Thomas Alves in 1919 in Portsmouth. Her father on her marriage certificate is Robert Dickson deceased who was noted as a stoker with the Royal Navy.

Any help would be really appreciated! Thank you in advance.

My late mother-in-law had a gt grandfather who was a stoker in the Royal Navy. I obtained his service records from The National Archives.

You can get a lot of help with obtaining information from archives and websites by using the ‘Getting started’ and ‘Tutorials’ buttons at the top of this page. The WDYTYA? Magazine has just finished a three-part series on genealogy basics too. Perhaps local libraries will have the back numbers (although you can get some through the magazine itself.

There is this Alice Dixon in 1891, just in case there was something wrong with the info given on the birth certificate. At the Railway Hotel, Portsea. Age 27, single, and cousin to Edward Andrews.

Hi

Thank you. I know her birthday is correct as my dad confirmed it. I did think the entry was maybe her mother but the census stated that she was single and her maiden name is Andrews.

Thank you though.

The 1939 Register confirms the birthdate as 28 July 1894

184 Nelson Road , Hornsey M.B., Middlesex,

Lillie ALVES 28 July 1894 married unpaid domestic duty (later surname SANDERSON)
Lily ALVES 4 Apr 1920 Under Presser Khaki Uniform (later surname SAMWELL)

Lillie married 1) Thomas ALVES in 1919
Thomas b 1895 Gorebridge Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
died March 1942 om board HMS Vortigern ( Navy records are on line at Findmypast a subsc site, a free site www.cwgc.org) suggest you google the HMS Vortigern

Lillie married 2) George W SANDERSON in 1955

What do you know about Alice ANDREWS & Robert DICKSON? Year of birth / place of birth / date of death, were there any other children of the marriage?

Neither can I immediately find Lillie E Alice on the 1901/1911 census etc

DICKSON can also be spelt DIXON + other variations....I have looked at the RN records on line, there are pages of Robert DICKSON.

Thank you for your reply.

I had managed to find the information contained above,, but thank you. I do not know anything other than the names of her parents and the fact that her father was a stoker in the Royal Navy. I was hoping to find Lilly in the 1901 census with her parents and then work backwards from there. I have her birth certificate which confirms her place of birth was 25 Arnaud Street, Portsea Island. I looked at this address in 1891 and 1901 census and they are not there.

Bearing in mind she was known as Alice, there are two registered in Portsea in 1894
The one we are interested in
Sep 1894 Portsea 2b 454
Dickson, Lillie Euphemia Alice
mother Andrews

and
Sep 1894 Portsea 2b 437
Dixon, Alice Amelia
mother Triggs

The mother of Alice Amelia may also be an Alice, if so she was admitted to the workhouse in Portsmouth, 24 May 1894
She was age 26, and with her were Alonzo Dixon, 4, and Joseph Dixon, 3.
On 22 July, Alice A Dixon is entered into the creed register. Informant mother. So she was born in the workhouse.
They were all discharged 4.3.95

By 1911, the mother Alice appears to be married to Alfred John Paine, living Portsmouth, and the three Dixon children are there (the boys born South America)

By the way, she was Alice Amelia Triggs, Spinster, when she married Mr Paine in 1898!

So, if that is one Alice accounted for in Portsmouth in 1911, there is also this one -
Alice Dixon, Adopted Daughter, 16, single, Corset Maker, born Hants Portsmouth.
Living with Thomas Hamilton Offord, his wife Harriet Eliza, and two children, at 44 Lower Derby Road, Portsmouth.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWQS-YZ1
(on FS she is just daughter and occupation "No Work"!)

So that might be a possibility.
If you have the address on the marriage certificate, witnesses, they might help perhaps.

Just to add, an oddity
1901 has Harriett Offord, 25, and her daughter Lilian, 2, with her father William Terry at 44 Derby Road, Portsmouth (piece 979 folio 130 page 23)
Also there is an adopted child (of William?), Alice Cornell, 6, born Portsmouth!
