Hannah Lea (mother-in-law of Emily Sophia Black) 19th c.

Postby Elizabeth Nield » Fri Sep 21, 2018 10:29 pm

While we're solving the mysteries of my great-grandmother Emily Sophia Black (or Smith, or whatever) who married Robert Nield, I'd also like to look into earlier generations. Hannah Lea was the daughter of John Henry Lea, a butcher, and married Robert Nield (son of Robert Nield and Eleanor Pinnington). They were the parents of several children including Robert Nield who married Emily. I'd like to know more about Hannah's family, her childhood, her married life - whatever can be found. Would going from being a butcher's daughter to a farmer's wife be considered "marrying up" in Cheshire at the time, or the reverse?

Thank you!

I cannot, at first glance, see the marriage of Robert and Hannah.
Do you have it?

Is it the Stockport 8a 89 one?

I think Martha LEA nee TAYLOR, mother of Hannah must have died between 1851 census and 1853
when on April 24th
John Henry LEA a widower and labourer, married another Martha, Martha WILSON an widow.
HIs father, William LEA a farmer and her father James ROBERTS gas maker
both residences = Heaton Norris
witnesses Anthony WRIGHT and Martha Jane WRIGHT

so that James WILDON in 1861 census must be James WILSON

To answer your question about social status

I'm thinking that if Hannah said her father was a butcher at her marriage she was gilding the lily somewhat.

at the 6 Jan 1840 marriage at Manchester Cathedral, of John Henry LEA (36) to Martha TAYLOR (28) he says he is a brewer
his father William LEA farmer and her father Charles TAYLOR, Cotton Dealer (so he may have had money --- maybe?) witnesses George HALL and William BLACKSHAW

Possible Death for John Henry LEA
Stockport 1868 June Qtr Stockport 8a, 26 age 53

Martha and the four younger sons, Samuel, Joseph, John and William are all still in Heaton Norris, at the 5 Duke street address. I cannot read all the occupations clearly but 2 are to do with cotton. (working not trading :( )

sorry I've been quiet for a bit! wow, a lot of this information is new to me, just processing. So John was first an Ag Lab - a farm worker? is that like plowing, harvesting, that kind of thing? and then "Coal face labourer"? Is that a coal miner? I really know nothing...

So wait, where's 16 year old Hannah Lea on that census when her stepmother and stepbrother come into the picture?

And then John becomes a brewer...was it common to have so many job changes? And then the "Butcher of Brinksway"...maybe I have too much true crime interests going on but that sounds like a serial killer media name or something. I hope that's not what's meant by it.

A lot going on! I'm really interested to find out more!
