GRO indexes

Having just used the indexes I am unimpressed, I was looking for a death in 1945 in Liverpool (Liverpool South) but it was not until I entered the old index name of "Liverpool.S" that it appeared, come on GRO it's got to be better than that!.

Unkers,
Whilst I totally agree that their search criteria is rubbish, what you can do in your case is to leave the RD out completely, and just use the area code. Whilst this a pretty broad search criteria, it is better than searching the whole Country. For example, when I search for someone from Tower Hamlets (covered by Stepney, Poplar, Bethnal Green RD’s etc, I use code 1c rather than guess the RD.

I use FreeBMD in conjunction with the GRO index. Find the likely entries on the former (which has a suberbly adaptable search facility) then cross check them with the latter.
