William Henry GILBERT

Postby SDV » Tue Sep 18, 2018 4:05 pm

William Henry GILBERT was born in Tottenham on 02 Jun 1869 to James GILBERT, a house painter, and Harriet MARDELL. In the 1871 and 1881 censuses he is living with his parents at addresses in Tottenham.

In November 1889, he joins the Royal Artillery. Soldier 75539 is posted to India on 02 Dec 1890, where he serves to 16 Mar 1895. He returns to England and is discharged from the army on 01 Apr 1902 at Shoeburyness. According to his discharge papers, his intended place of residence was Tottenham.

However, I can't find him on any documentation post his discharge. I suppose he might have had a military pension, though I have found no record.

The search is complicated as there are a number of William Gilbert's in the area, some clearly related. And indeed a few William Henry Gilberts!

I would appreciate any insights or help on finding him in 1911 and 1939 (if he was still alive). Also I would like to discover when and where he died.

Many thanks to all of you who have looked at this post. It would seem that you are as stumped as me, but thanks anyway.

I am refreshing this topic in the hope that someone will have some fresh ideas on locating William. He just seems to disappear following his return from military service.

Given he would only have been 42 at the time of the 1911 census, I would have expected to have been able to find him somewhere in the returns, but it seems I was far too optimistic. Does this suggest he died between 1902 and 1911, if so I can't find an appropriate death

Are there are reasons for him not to appear in 1911? Mental institution?

I really would appreciate some help.

Sorry - not an answer except to say even if he was in a mental institution he should still appear on the census.

Have you already seen the December Quarter 1908 death in Edmonton for a William Gilbert, volume 3a page 292?

Yes I'm fairly sure I saw the 1908 entry and it wasn't my man, but I might need to reapply for the PDF to be sure such is the state of my record keeping!

Thanks for the pointing it out.
