Struggling to find the Trigg family in 1841/51 Censuses

Postby JaneyH » Fri Sep 07, 2018 8:07 pm

I'm struggling to find my Trigg ancestors in the 1841 or 1851 Censuses. Here's what I know so far.

Richard Trigg (baptised at Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire, 13 December 1801, parents William and Ann). Richard married Sarah Cope, 24 June 1824, Newnham-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. Children as follows:

Ann, baptised 1824, Blakeney, parents residence Woodside, father's occupation labourer
William, baptised 1824, Newnham, parents residence Newnham, father's occupation marble mason
Thomas, baptised 1829, Newnham, parents residence Newnham, father's occupation labourer
John, baptised 1832, Awre, parents residence Awre, father's occupation labourer

It looks like there's a burial for John later in 1832 in Awre. I've been unable to find this family group in the 1841 or 1851 Census. There's a potential lead for a Richard Trigg (transcribed as Frig on Ancestry, born Broad Oak which is a good match) in Cheltenham in 1851, but this is with a wife Mary and children Richard, Emma and Alfred.

I've searched separately for the surviving children Ann, William and Thomas on Ancestry and FMP but without success. The vast majority of my Forest of Dean ancestors never moved far from their roots, but this isn't to say this particular family stayed put.

Fresh eyes and insights much appreciated!

Relationships not stated in 1841, but is this Richard and son Thomas?
Corpus Street, Cheltenham, Glocs:
Richard Trigg, b1801, marble maker, born in county
Thomas Trigg, b1831, born in county
Charlotte Keeley, b 1795, laundress, b.i.c.

Thanks for this, elsabels and sdup26.

I've now tracked Sarah Trigg (nee Cope, b.1805) through the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 Censuses. Her husband, Richard (b.1801) is proving more elusive. My working theory at present is that they separated at some point 1832-41 and he moved to Cheltenham. The 1841 record that sdup26 found is a good fit (and has son Thomas with him). Move forward to 1851 and still in Cheltenham is Richard (49 - surname transcribed as Frig on Ancestry) with an apparent wife Mary (45), and children Richard, Emma and Alfred. There's then a Richard and Mary with son Alfred in 1861 in Cheltenham, although the ages of the two Alfreds don't tally. In both 1851 and 1861 Richard's place of birth is given as Broadoak, which is half-way between Newnham and Westbury-on-Severn.

I've also found a marriage of a Richard Trigg to Mary Price in Gloucester St. Aldate's in 1858. Richard is shown as a widower with father William (correct father's name). Next step is to investigate the births/baptisms of the children in Cheltenham, I think!
