I have always wondered about his birth not being registered been through records office in preston and the registras here both came up with no record of a birth for Michael rooney in preston there is one for a Michael rooney around same age in Prescott (Liverpool) do you think its worth taking the plunge and sending for this? Thank you

You queried the Prescot entry, but can rule it out: the GRO site shows that the Michael Rooney born in Prescot in 1840 has a mother with maiden name Boneas. He's on the 1841 census for Prescot with mother Margaret and father James.

He is shown on both the 1841 & 1851 census with his parents and is likely to be the one on the 1861 census showing place of birth Ormskirk

Bernadette,
I agree with others that because someone is christened somewhere, they may not have been born there.
My youngest brother is a case in point. He was born in Lincoln but christened in Midcalder,
West Lothian,Scotland where the rest of the family were christened and lived before moving south
for work.Good luck
Grace :D

You say that you have seen the baptismal record for Michael, have you seen the original entry, i.e Parish Register or have you seen a transcript, i.e a brief copy of the basic details!

You have the 1840 death certificate of Thomas Rooney, besides the informant possibly being a family member did it give an address other than the place he died?

Trying to establish ianbee's DIXON info, I have found the 2 following birth entry, both vaguely point in the right direction for Magee /McGee etc The same appears to happen with DIXON

DIXON, JANE MCGINN
GRO Reference: 1855 J Quarter in PRESTON Volume 08E Page 473

DICKSON, JOHN MCGHIE
GRO Reference: 1850 J Quarter in THE PRESTON UNION Volume 21 Page 757

Assuming Jane was the last born of the relationship, and Ellen is a widow by 7 April 1861 the time frame for John's death assuming he died in Preston and the local area is 1854 - 1861

I am struggling to get on the gro.gov.uk site to look for a suitable death entry, this should tell you his marital status

I was born in Warwickshire and baptised in a part of Cheshire where my grandparents lived!
