Naval records for 1911 HMS Royal Arthur

Postby PostedPast » Sat Sep 01, 2018 1:35 pm

I’m searching for a sailor who sailed on HMS Royal Arthur in 1911. I only have his first name: Charles. I believe he was from Southampton. I’ve searched and searched but haven’t found him on Ancestry. Anyone know of any crew lists I might be able to access?
The ship arrived in Egypt in November 1911.

FindMyPast has the 1911 census for ships of the Royal Navy At Sea and Ports Abroad, and I used HMS Royal Arthur as 'location in 1911' - on the list of seamen that came up, I can see only two called Charles who came from Hampshire. Charles Lacey, single, aged 25 (1886) born Shedfield, Fareham, Hants. And Charles Pragnall, married, aged 33 (1878) born Hedge End, Botley, Hants.

Of the two places mentioned I would say that Hedge End is the more likely if he was from Southampton.

Thank you. Yes, I live not far from the area.

I have five on a shortlist. I'll try and narrow them down.

The Census, of course, only lists people on a certain day, this set of references from The National Archives website for seamens' service records for 1911 (ADM 188) should help http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.u ... na&_st=adv

There appear to be 8 possibilities, they should be available online for a price!.

Not really. That is a list of men called Charles, apparently all born in Southampton, who joined the Royal Navy in 1911. None of them were serving on HMS Arthur.
The younger ones were boys who started on training ships in 1911.

Note that Charles Pragnell was a Corporal. And by cross referencing with some of the others on that census page it looks like he would have been a Royal Marine.
I don't know if that makes any difference, if you were to drop a hint as to the context of your search it might help!
Ian

EDIT - Here he is, Charles Pragnell, Royal Marine Artillery

Reading PP's next reply, it does look a tough one!
