Elizabeth Gilchrist

Postby plf99 » Fri Aug 31, 2018 7:05 pm

Hello

I am trying to find some info on my great-great-great grandmother, Elizabeth Gilchrist. She married William Scott in 1838 in Jarrow, Durham and is said to have been of 'full age' at the time, which would make her at least 21 years old. However, the only Elizabeth Gilchrist who fits the bill, was born in Berwick, in 1821, which means she would only be 16. I suppose it could be possible she lied on her marriage certificate?

Scott is such a common name that without more information it's difficult to pinpoint the right family in the census, however, if they are the family at Waterloo Vale, South Shields in 1851 then son James was born 1845 as James Corbett Scott.

The free index on Durham Records Online brings up a baptism in 1815 for Elizabeth Gilchrist-Corbet in Castle Ward (Northumberland), although you would need to buy a few credits to obtain the full transcript.

Sorry, they are the family at Waterloo Vale, yes. That Elizabeth Gilchrist-Corbet record does sound interesting, but according to the 1851 census, she was only 31, so I'm not sure whether it might have been an earlier born child that has since died?

The baptism for Elizabeth Gilchrist - Corbet took place at Newburn Northumberland 18 Jan 1815. Parents John and Margaret Gilchrict-Corbet of Lemington, John was a labourer.Lemington is 15 miles fromJarrow

Another one to consider took place at All Saints Newcastle upon Tyne 28 Sep 1817. Parents William an Jane Gilchrist of New Pandon. William a mariner. New Pandon is less than 10 miles from Jarrow.

Do you have the marriage certificate which would name the Father?

Ages on marriage records and census records can often vary!! Women frequently "lost" a few years if they married someone younger.
The record Avaline found seems a good fit. The birth record for James Corbet Gilchrist spells "Corbet"in the same way that it is spelt in the Elizabeth Corbet baptism.
The marriage cert. will tell you if you have the correct Lady

Giving your correct age on marriage wasn't compulsory then, so if Elizabeth said she was 'of full age,' it doesn't necessarily mean she was 21 or older.

There's also John Gillchrist Corbet, a Labourer, and wife Margaret who had a daughter named Elizabeth Gillchrist baptized 23 January 1820, South Shields.
Are they the same couple?

Ian - they may be.
There is a burial for an Elizabeth Gilchrist on Durham records online 24 May 1817 at St Hilda's South Shields aged 1. Unfortunately the parents are not mentioned and there is no mention of the name Corbet. The same record is on Familysearch same details. Family living at Mill Dam S Shields on both records.
