ALFRED MILLER

Postby Mike1960 » Tue Aug 21, 2018 4:18 pm

Looking to trace Alfred Miller born 15th February 1859, son of John & Susan Miller, living at 8 Tenterden Street (Beerhouse) in the 1861 census. John Miller was an engine fitter and trying to find his background as well.

In the 1871 census, they're living in Norman Street, in the Lime Street area of Liverpool. John is still a steam engine fitter. The couple have 4 more children - Francis aged 6, Alice 4, Jane 2, and Mary 9 months, all born in Liverpool. Mary's GRO birth entry shows her mother's maiden name as Stannard.

In the 1851 census for St Helen, Ipswich, Suffolk, in the household of Elizabeth Westbroons, Susan Stannard, a dressmaker, is a visitor, and John Millard (sic), an engineer from Plymouth, is a lodger.

John Miller's year of birth is 1823 in 1861, 1827 in 1871 and 1823 in 1881, while that 1851 census in Suffolk (assuming he's the lodger/engineer in the household including Susan Stannard) has him born around 1812. Similarly, he was born in Plymouth in 1851 and also in 1861. But he's born in Lambeth in 1871, and while Susan is consistent with a birth place of Suffolk up to 1871, in the 1881 L'Pool census, both she and John are suddenly born in the City of London, Middlesex.

So the John Miller born and baptised 1824 in Plymouth St Andrew (parents Matthew and Maria) may or may not be a possibility.

This is why none of my relations can go any further back due to the variations of information for John Miller. Having such a common name does not help either. Also Stannard is quite a popular name in Suffolk.

Looking around the records that are available, there is this Baptism entry;

Name: Susannah Stannard
Gender: Female
Birth Place: Capel St. Mary, England
Christening Date: 2 Nov 1828
Christening Place: Capel St. Mary, Suffolk, England
Father: William Stannard
Mother: Phoebe Stannard

On the 1851 census at the same address is Isabella

Name: Isabella Stannard
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 7 Sep 1823
Baptism Place: Copdock,Suffolk,England
Father: William Stannard
Mother: Phoebe Read
FHL Film Number: 919568

Name: Phoebe Read
Gender: Female
Marriage Date: 7 May 1821
Marriage Place: St Mary Tower,Ipswich,Suffolk,England
Spouse: William Stannard
FHL Film Number: 918506

You may need to acquire Susan Stannard's marriage cert to John Miller to establish who the respective father's are.

If you haven't used the free site for guidance familysearch.org, maybe this is your way forward visiting there resource centre , Record office etc

There is a researcher on the public trees on ancestry who has this line Stannard/ Miller

I have deleted the Emma Stannard b Cosford not likely to be the correct Emma!!OOPs!!

That ancestry tree looks a bit unreliable. It has an 1851 census page showing John Miller born, and living in Lambeth, aged 24, a bookbinder. It doesn't seem very likely that a bookbinder would be an engineer in subsequent censuses, but you never know!

Has anyone found a marriage for John Miller and Susan? Is it possible her Stannard surname is from a marriage, rather than her maiden name?

Looking at John the name is MILLAR desc as engineer b Plymouth

What about Alfred, 24, Married, born London, also an engineer. John's brother perhaps?
One possibility might be the chap who married at St Giles Camberwell, 7 Nov 1846
Alfred Britath Miller, full age, Bachelor, Engineer, father John Miller, Engineer
+
Sarah Weekly
Residence for both George Street.

In 1851, in Carlisle Street, Lambeth, Sarah Miller, 24, Married, living with two young children, Alfred and Jane. Husband not at home. Piece 1571 folio 566 page 28.
Baptisms in Lambeth in 1850 for those two children (father Alfred an Engineer)

Baptism at St Sepulchre in London, 1 July 1827
Alfred Brittiffe
son of John + Jane Miller
abode Plymouth
father a Machinist

It was another double baptism, the other one was Caroline Woo?ridge (Miller)
