How to find birth farthers family

Postby Moonbeam79 » Wed Aug 15, 2018 8:37 pm

I’m trying to trace my birth fathers family. All I know is his name and date of death. Does anyone know if it’s even possible to find anything out with so little information

If you obtain his death certificate that should give you his date of birth.

From that you should be able to trace his birth registration and obtain his birth certificate which will give you his parent's details. You'll then be able to work back from there.

If you need more guidance or help with that send me a PM.

If the death is after 1969 the date of birth will be shown on the BMD record entry

A full death record will give you:
Name
Date and place of death
Date and place of birth (before 1969 a certificate only showed the age of the deceased)
Occupation
Abode
Cause of death
The person who gave the information for the death registration

Why not post the name and date and place of death and let us help you!

Before doing any other research - get a copy of the death certificate. It should confirm his date and place of birth and most importantly the person who registered the death (the informant) is likely to be a relative, so you will have their name and address as well.

I agree with the purchase of the death certificate, speculatively points you in a direction that may ring bells, however the death I found was W Midlands, the Probate 'down south!'

Let us know how you get on

Don't assume that just because a death is in one area and the probate granted in another as Elsabels has highlighted it is not the same person.

My mother died in Oxford but because my sister who lives in Chester applied for probate this was granted in Liverpool (a city my mother had never even been to!)

The problem is that Moonbeam79 says that his Jeffrey died 26 March 2017, whereas the probate record is for a Jeffrey Walters who died 11 August 2017.
Electoral registers have a Jeffrey J Walters in Lowe Avenue to 2016 (apparently no other occupants)
