Trying to trace my grandparents

Postby Moonbeam79 » Tue Aug 07, 2018 6:55 pm

I have just started my family tree and I’m finding it hard to find much about my grandad. His name was Joseph hampson born 11/12/1907 he married lily Edge around 1930. They lived in wednesbury West Midlands. They had 7 children. Think Lily may also have lived with someone called Tonks, but I can’t find the census that’s any later than 1911. Would appreciate any help anyone can give

Start with the basics - if you haven't already done so, get their marriage certificate, which will give their ages, addresses, father's names and occupations.

Use that information to obtain their birth certificates and then work backwards with birth certificates which will give the names of their parents and so on.

She appears on the 1939 Register ( there are no UK censuses currently available after 1911) on both FindMyPast and Ancestry, transcribed as Nampson, in the same house as a Mr Tonks.

There are seven Hampson births (with Mothers name Edge) registered in Wednesbury between 1935 and 1951 (from the index on FreeBMD).

Thank you, I think they were married in West Bromwich, so I guess I’ll have to get in touch with the registry office there, for a copy of their marriage certificate, thanks again

Or you could order a copy from www.gro.gov.uk for £9.25.

Or use FreeBMD to find the reference numbers you need and order from the General Register Office.

Thank you again, I want to try and find out as much as I can about them. Think my grandad was in the army during ww2 so that’s something else I’ll look into. It’s all so interesting

Joseph and Lily married at St John, Wednesbury, in 1930. On the same page are Thomas C Taylor and Doris Tonks. A double wedding?

Moonbeam79. If you want to investigate your grandfather's military records from WW2 you'll need to apply for them and meet specific criteria.
