Help chasing birth records

Postby coopernicola » Sat Jul 14, 2018 1:37 pm

As you’ve not yet found his birth registration be aware that:
Not everyone actually knew their DoB, or sometimes chose to be creative with the truth.
The person providing information (either census or death) may not have known exact DoB.
This may not be the name he was registered with, but the name he was known by.

I feel Joshua John Richards may be a red herring as there is a death for him: GRO Birth 26 Jul 1907 Died Dec 1982 Birmingham V32 p48.
Joshua Richards GRO Birth 19 May 1907 Died 1980 Walsall V39 p347 is a better match, this man is on 1939 Register with a presumed wife Elsie M Richards, who is likely to be your “Elsie Maud”.
Do you have a copy of the death certificate?

Who is this Joshua Richards born 19 May 1907?
There is only one, and as I said his d-o-b is 19 July 1907.
Died in Walsall in 1980.
1939 wife is Elsie M.

Yes that is the person. What does Redacted mean... is it cause someone has recently died, if so that's my auntie

They redact (block out) an entry if they think someone is still alive, because they don’t wish to show details of living individuals. If your auntie died recently, she ‘should’ appear in full, as she is no longer alive. However, it does take some time following someone’s death, before the information makes its way to the register, and the entry un-redacted, so she may still be redacted.

Help chasing birth records

Postby coopernicola » Sat Jul 14, 2018 3:10 pm

Ian, I think you & I have identified the same Joshua Richards (who is most likely Jayne’s grandfather). However I’m struggling to find a birth. The nearest being Joshua John Richards who appears to be missing on 1939 Register?

Hi Nicola
I was just trying to clear up the date of birth of Joshua. I think there is an error on ancestry. Whether the 19 July date of birth turns out to be correct, only time will tell.
I would say, if you can't find Joshua, look for Harry (Henry?) the puddler in Bradley. There may be one in 1911.

Coopernicola - Have you made you mind up yet?

In one post you say - "I feel Joshua John Richards may be a red herring" and in your next post you say - "The nearest being Joshua John Richards"

So sticking as closely as possible to facts

I think we have established that there is "Joshua Richards" with a birthday on death cert and 1939 of 19th July 1907. The 1939 register establishes the link to Elsie M and then the birthdate establishes the link to the death cert. So there is a mismatch of family knowledge (19th May) and records (19 Jul) - either could be right, but I would suggest the July date is more likely.

The next question is where is his birth registration.

The 1909 Joshua John GRO birth is the closest I could find with the name Joshua - could it be him? and he didn't know his birthday at all? His mother's maiden name is Gough. Angeljayne - do you know the mother's maiden name? If there are siblings you can see if they have the same mother (and same name on GRO index)?

Alternatively maybe there is someone who calls himself Joshua at a later date but was registered under another name - perhaps Joshua was a middle name?

Angeljayne - is there any more you can tell us?
