Death before marriage?

Postby woodchal » Tue Jul 10, 2018 9:50 am

Olive Vera Edith Ridgers married my Great Uncle Charles Vincent Green (I met them as a young boy).

After Charles died in 1970 Vera (as she was known) remarried an Albert Skilton, who my father told me was a milkman/dairy man and that he died shortly after the wedding leaving Vera a lot of money or perhaps the dairy.

Here’s my conundrum. The wedding with Skilton was registered in 2 Qtr 1973, but Skilton’s death was registered in 2nd Qtr 1972. There is a probate record indicating death was 12 May 1972 in “Callejones Huercal Almeria Spain” and the probate was processed in January 1973. It would appear that he died before the wedding!

I know I will have to order certificates and the will/probate to resolve - unless you know better

A death in Spain would not be registered in the UK.

The probate you have found in 1972 is in the name Albert R Skilton
The marriage in 1973 was in Alton, Hampshire and Olive married Albert H Skilton.

There is a death (and probate) of Albert Harry Skilton who died in nearby Farnham in 1974, that sounds more likley to be the one you should look at ?

Anthony is spot on there.

The address quoted in the probate calendar for Albert Harry Skilton in 1974 is precisely the same as for Olive Vera Edith Skilton in 1992.

I was worried about the H, but was “enticed” by the date. I hadn’t found the Harry death, so many thanks. Too many Alberts!
