Irish Parish Registers - sponsors

Postby RobOH » Mon Jul 09, 2018 3:55 pm

In Irish Parish Registers from the 1810s onwards, does anyone know if female sponsors at baptisms/marriages typically used their maiden names? Or once married, did they list their married name? This would make a small but significant difference to tracing sponsor names.

Also, has anyone found any rules of thumb for the relationship with sponsors? My sense is that they are siblings or cousions of the couple being married, or of the parents at a baptism.

I'm looking at County Cork in particular, but this may not matter if there's an all-Ireland approach to sponsorship. Thanks for any thoughts!

generally married names - godparent tended to be about the same age as the parents of the child, so brothers sisters cousins etc, but could also be friends or neighbours. Similar pattern for marriage witnesses, although sometime with these you can see repeating names used for several marriages - possibly just a person available near the church
