Thomas John Edward Gass - Merchant Navy

Postby Maggie-50 » Tue Jul 03, 2018 7:00 pm

Hi
Have tried unsuccessfully for many years to trace Thomas John Edward Gass. He was born in 1898 Walworth London to Charles and Margaret Gass. He enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1916 and paid for his discharge for the sum of £24 in 1923. He joined the Merchant Navy a short while after; sailing between Bermuda and New York. I had always been informed by my grandmother, his cousin that he had jumped ship in New York changing his name and going on to have a family. At some stage his mother Margaret was either very ill or had died and with the aid of the Salvation Army he was contacted living in New York. What I find strange is that according to records found on the Ellis Island site of the ships manifest is that it lists Thomas as having been discharged, the column for seamen that deserted shows Nil. So why would he need to change his name etc? But I cannot find any reference to Thomas anywhere in the USA censuses or the UK, so it does look as if he did change his identity. Can anyone advise where I could look next, I did contact the Salvation Army but apparently a lot of records were destroyed from that period?
regards Margaret

Hi
Thanks for all the information, doesn't appear to be any name change at all as he is still using his birth name in the late 30's and giving the name of his wife; so much for gathering family info not always to be trusted. Can any one tell me if this border crossing is for someone leaving the states for Canada or the other way around? Can't make out if Thomas is coming or going, especially as there appears to be an address of his wife in Brooklyn.
regards
Margaret

He is coming into the States. But that Vermont collection looks a bit complicated

Has to be said that he is still somewhat elusive other than that record!
