Oh dear, why do things always get so complicated.

Well it would appear that Constance Ruth Humpfrey married Leonard Alfred HODGSON in 1911 [Q3 1911 Kensington 1a 410].

Moreover, according to the 1919 Electoral Register the following were living at 387 Portobello Road: Leonard Alfred HODGSON, Constance Ruth HODGSON and Mary Ann Humpfrey.

Constance and Leonard were still there in 1926, but no Mary Ann Humpfrey. Although there was a Charles William Burchett and a Mary Ann Burchett!

Amazingly, there is a marriage in Sep 1919 between a Charles W Burchett and Mary A MARDELL [Q3 1919 Kensington 1a 563].

It looks like Mary Ann died in 1927. Mary Ann BURCHETT d Q1 1927 Kensington 1a 339, aged 67.

What do you think?

Hi
It's pretty amazing. But throw in that newspaper report and it does look like it is your lady!

There would appear to be a number of stories in the West London Observer. From all accounts Charles William Burchett was a drunk, violent and a thief!

We seem to have solved Mary Ann's death, but her birth still remains a mystery.

Another confirmation of the connection. The informant on the death certificate of John Albert Mardell's death certificate was one F A JARY (daughter) of 72 Scotland Green, Tottenham.

I think we now know what happened to Mary Ann Weeden, though it came as a big surprise.

The next problem is to try and sort out her birth. Not only can't I find her birth certificate, I also can't find her own baptism or the baptisms of her siblings.

P.S. Just one other nagging question. Is Ivy the daughter of Mary Ann? Or is she the daughter of Constance? I believe the birth registration conveniently shows the former, but doesn't necessarily mean anything.

P.S.S. Sorry but another nagging question. When did John Robert HUMPHREY die? Clearly after the 1911 census and before 1926, as he was described as deceased on Ivy's marriage certificate. Presumably, also before Mary Ann's marriage in 1919, as the newly weds seem to move in to the house he had shared with Mary Ann.

My gut feeling is it is the daughter of Constance, taken in as the child of Mary & JRH, birth entry may reveal more
