Flavell (Salford, Lancs.)

Postby DianaCanada » Mon Jun 18, 2018 4:15 pm

Looking for Annie Flavell registered Jun 1912 in Salford, Lancs. and her brother Alfred registered Dec 1915 Barton I., Lancs. They were the children of Fred(erick) Flavell and Ann Skeet Brearley. I have this couple’s marriage information. I am related to Ann and have her parentage, etc. Ann died Mar Q 1919, Salford, age 31. Fred remarried quickly, 8 Nov 1919 in Pendleton, Lancs. to Emma Sarah Ogden, a widow, daughter of William Sandiford. No ages given, just “full” (Lancashire Parish Clerks site).
Emma and Fred had a son, George, registered in Sep 1920. Fred died Jun 1921, Salford, age 44.
I cannot find Fred(erick) on the 1911. Ann is back in Salford, with 5 month old Fred Jr., (as Flavel) staying with her uncle George Bower, listed as a visitor. As Fred was in the army in Beverley, Yorkshire when they married in 1909, he may be out of the country for the 1911 census.
I believe Frederick is the son of Frederick Flavell, of Bradford, Lancs. (1881 census) whose occupation matches that on his son’s marriage record (puddler). Frederick Jr.’s sister Ellen married Ann’s uncle, so there is that family connection as well.
Fred Flavell’s death is off by a few years in 1921 so possibly it is not him but it looks promising. Probate records have not yielded anything for Fred or his second wife.
I cannot find any trace of Annie or Alfred after their birth registrations. I cannot find out what happened to Fred’s widow Emma Sarah after his death. I found a possible marriage for their son George in 1943, but have no definite proof that is was the same George. As he is not related to me, am really concentrating on finding Annie and Alfred.
Any help appreciated!

Alfred is not on Fred's ww1 army record. Don't know why.
But better mention this death just in case
June 1916 St. Asaph 11b 439
Flavell, Alfred
age 0

Seems a little unlikely location wise, but no other Alfred birth other than the Dudley one?

Thanks so much for this! I didn't think to look for it on Ancestry.

There is an Annie Flavell registered in Jun 1913 in Dudley, think this might be the one you have here. Strangely they do seem to share May 7th as a birthday.
The Flavell name is much more numerous in the Midlands than in Lancashire, someone must have moved north at some point. Lots of them in the Dudley registration district.

I looked for Emma Sarah on the 1939 but missed her, thanks for finding her for me. Oops, now I realize I had looked for Emma Sarah, not the other way round!

If Alfred wasn't mentioned on the army record, perhaps the death in Wales is right. As far as I know neither side of the family had any ties there, but one never knows.
