Mary Cronin born in Ireland c1862

Postby Beverley Stephens » Sat Jun 16, 2018 2:58 pm

Mary Cronin was baptized on 17 May 1862 at Passage West, Cork, Ireland, her parents are David Cronin and Ellen Clahane (source: Ancestry Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655 – 1915).

The family moved to Jersey, Channel Islands and lived there between 1863 and 1867 before settling in Bristol, UK.

Mary passed away at the age of 10 on 24 Aug 1872 in Bristol having had “Chronic disease of the Brain”.

Her mother's maiden name on her siblings birth certificates and baptism records is spelt Clahane; Cain; Caghan; Keogh and Kaye.

Irish family history research is new to me and I haven’t got a clue where to look for Mary’s birth, is there an Irish equivalent of the GRO? Can certificates be purchased? Any guidance on finding her birth record would be much appreciated. Thank you.

CIvil registration of Births started here in 1864, so there will be no birth cert for Mary, just the baptism record from the parish.

You can view an image of the actual register showing the baptism on the (free) National Library of Ireland website (see the 2nd last record on the right hand page) Sponsors (Godparents) are John Kiely & Cath(erine) Daly
