Richard Woolgar

Postby SDV » Thu Jun 07, 2018 2:15 pm

Richard Woolgar was born in Keymer in Sussex in c1840. I have located his baptism as 13 Dec 1840 in St Cosmas and St Damian in Keymer. His father was Edward Woolgar (a tile maker) and his mother Mary Woolvin. On the 1841 census, he was 7 months old.

I can't, however, find a birth certificate for him, although records exist for his tow elder brothers, Edward (b1838 Cuckfield) and Henry (b 1839 Cuckfield), and his younger sister Sarah (b 1843 Cuckfield). Please note that the Richard Woolgar born in Steyning in 1842 [Q4 1842 Steyning 7 418] is not the one I am looking for, though probably a relative. Not only does my Richard have different parents, he was baptised two years earlier!

Richard married Jane SMITH in Shoreditch in 1866. Following her early death in 1871, he re-married to Fanny Thompson in November 1873, again in Shoreditch.

I believe that Richard and Fanny had a son James, born in Hackney in 1876 [Q1 1876 Hackney 1b 494].

In 1881, Richard is in Hackney Union Workhouse. I can find no sign of Fanny.

I would appreciate some help on (1) locating his birth certificate if it exists, (2) his and Fanny's residence after 1881, and (3) his death and burial.

Baptism of Richard Woolgar (image) at Keymer, 13 Dec 1840

Can't read all of the abode, some of it is St Johns Common. Which is Burgess Hill way.
So maybe in 1901 Thomas Woolgar, 60, born Sussex Burgess Hill, Bricklayer's labourer, wife Emma, 56, born Salisbury, living in Brighton (Woodgar on ancestry)

Death of Thomas Richard Woolgar in Brighton, Dec 1908, age 67

Thomas Richard was the name of a son of Richard Woolgar and Jane Smith, born 1867 (what happened to him?) Perhaps the father used the Thomas name himself later? Occupation is the same as in 81.

Very interesting. The major problem is that he married Fanny THOMPSON in November 1873 and they had a son in 1876.

If the Thomas in Brighton in 1901 is my Richard, then Fanny from Shoreditch must have died and Richard must have married Emma from Salisbury. All very possible, except I can't find any supporting records.

Richard was definitely born in Keymer, though some of the baptism records give Itchingfield as a residence for the family.

His workhouse admissions in early 1881 are giving nearest relative as his sister Emma W.,(Trafalgar House) 1 Shacklewell Lane

Was that the Emma born around 1855 to Edward and Mary Woolgar? In 1881 there's an Emma Woolgar, 25, born Sussex Burges Hill, a servant in Islington. Maybe that address was out of date.

His admission on 4th July 1881 mentions two sons, Edward and Albert (not Thomas!)
Edward and Albert are at the workhouse school in Brentwood in 1881.

In July 1878, a Fanny Woolgar is admitted to Hackney workhouse. Says she is married and born circa 1851. Deserted.
Admission of Edward and Albert Wollgar, 23.10.80, says -
Father in prison, mother dead. Mother in law address unknown.
They were discharged to Brentwood in December

Very interesting indeed. I assume that these are the sons of Jane and that Fanny is the mother-in-law.

I need to go back and rebuild the tree starting Edith Richard's siblings.

Yes, it's Fanny who has disappeared. Sure is getting complicated!

According to information gained from census records, Edward and Mary had 9 children: Edward 1838, Henry 1839, Richard. 1840, Sarah 1843, Eliza 1847, Jane 1849, Charity 1850, Margaret 1853 and Emma 1856.

I believe that Richard had 3 children with Jane: Thomas Richard 1867, Edward David 1868 and Albert 1870. I also believe that he had one child with Fanny: James 1876.
