Elizabeth Anne Hacon born 1835.

Postby midshipman » Wed Jun 06, 2018 2:11 pm

Elizabeth Anne Hacon was born in Aldborough, Norfolk and Christened 28th April 1835 in Thurgarton, Norfolk.
Her parents were Richard Hacon 1793-1861 and Frances Ann Hacon nee Gant 1803-1873.
The last mention of Elizabeth is on 1861 census with her parents and brother Alfred.
Her sister Frances Theresa Hacon 1838-1892 married Samuel Hammond 1836-1922 and emigrated to Australia. Could Elizabeth have gone with them after she lost her parents.
There is a marriage March 1872 in Great Yarmouth to Wigger but that is Elizabeth Hagon and not Elizabeth Hacon.
I wondered if any forum member could please help me discover what happened to Elizabeth.

There's an Elizabeth Anna Hacon in New Zealand
Bankruptcy and intestacy
See Papers Past
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

Includes one notice as Elizabeth Ann - in the South Canterbury Times, 23 March 1881
IN THE DISTRICT COURT of TIMARU and OAMARU Holden at Timaru. In the matter of “The Debtors and Creditors Act 1876” and of “ The Debtors and Creditors Act Amendment Act 1878 ” and of “ The Debtors and Creditors Act Amendment Act 1879” and of the bankruptcy of the bankruptcy of Elizabeth Ann Hacon of Timaru in the Provincial District of, Canterbury in the Colony of New Zealand boarding-house-keeper a debtor.

Lyttelton Times, 15 May 1889
In the Estate of ELIZABETH ANNA HACON, late of Christchurch, Governess, deceased, Intestate

New Zealand Gazette has Elizabeth Anna Hacon's death as 25 October 1888. But the death reg (as Elizabeth Hacon) gives age as 47. Which is younger than your lady. Might be worth looking into perhaps. Buried Northern Cemetery, Otago?

On that marriage in Great Yarmouth, MarQ1872 - according to the bmd site, it was for Hannah Elizabeth Hagon and Richard Wigger. However, the Parish Register for St Nicholas, Yarmouth, shows banns between Richard Wiggen and Elizabeth Ann Hacon were read on 7th, 14th and 21st Jan 1872.

Many thanks sdup26. I chased down the Wigger marriage and found surname to be Hagon and wrong age.

Also thanks ianbee.
I found an Elizabeth Hacon in New Zealand on internet previously but discounted her. I hadn't realised she had middle name Ann/Anna.
My Elizabeth's father, 2 brothers plus brother-in-law were all surgeons. I would describe her as a "gentlewoman".
A bankrupt boarding house keeper doesn't quite fit the profile?

Perhaps it was a genteel boarding house.
It's the uncommonness of the name that might make her interesting. The only other Hacons in the NZ indexes at that time are a Walter Edward and his wife Margaret Jane.
That said, I haven't seen any sign yet of her arrival there, whoever she was.

Ashburn Hall may have been a private lunatic asylum

By bizarre coincidence, the other Hacon in NZ, Walter Edward, was a physician and had been the Medical Superintendent at the Sunnyside Lunatic Asylum in Christchurch.

Elizabeth Ann Hacon was a witness to the above marriage on 14 Jan 1863

Is Heacon in the Northern Cemetery database!

This may be interesting - a letter to the Timaru Herald, 17 May 1882, from E. A. Hacon!
