Change of Names Deeds

Postby mandyjanes » Fri May 18, 2018 7:08 pm

I am researching the family of a friend. One set of her grandparents both changed their names sometime before they married in 1949. On their marriage certificate it says that they both changed their names and that they were both divorced.

What I need to know is whether it is possible to get a copy or transcript of their Change of Name Deeds.

See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/changes-of-name/ and https://deedpolloffice.com/research - the last looks a bit similar to the first.

Note in particular TNA's comment that
Contrary to popular belief, it has always been possible to change your name without having to register the change with any official body

In other words, there may not have been any documentation at all.

Suggest you try copies of the Gazette https://www.thegazette.co.uk
It is free to search and look at results.
Change of name happened twice in my Family in the 1940s and on both occasions it appeared in the Gazette and for one of them in the local paper too. So I would check local newspapers too.
The announcements were made by the Solicitors dealing with the requests so that may give you an avenue to explore.
